I have an 06 Explorer & there is a problem with the OEM trailer plug. The trailer blinkers & brake lights work but the tail lights do not. I have tried tracking the wires back to find the problem but it is very confusing. All the ligts on the vehicle work fine. Is the plug on independent harness & where does it connect or initiate at? It looks like I should be able to get a harness from the dealer & just replace this part. In the "good old days" I would just splice a new 4 way flat plug onto this but I am not sure with this new stuff. Thanks
The Trailer lights are entirely independent circuits with fuses and relays in the main power distribution panel (under the hood driver side by the firewall on my 97)
I'd suggest you first confirm that the connections at the trailer plug and the receptacle on the Explorer are not dirty/corroded. You might try wiggling the trailer connector a bit to see if the parking lights flicker when doing so. If not, then get out the test light and check for power to the receptacle. Are you certain the problem isn't in the trailer wiring? Are you using an RV-style 7-wire connector on both the vehicle and the trailer, or are you adapting to a 4-wire? The little cover door on the Explorer will have molded in to it the connector pinout which will help when checking with a test light.
Get some dielectric grease and put it in the connector at vehicle and then dab a little on the trailer connector. It's worth a try for ~ $3 max (for the dielectric grease).
