ANOTHER engine oil capacity question......

Before I get jumped I did a search on this subject and did not get a concrete answer.I know there has been an ongoing debate over the appropriate amount of oil to be added after an oil change and I was wondering if there has been a solid judgement made as to the answer to this question. I have always added 15 qts. after every oil change since the truck was new and this puts my oil level on the stick just a little above the full mark. I have never experienced any problems from doing this. I just changed the oil again last week and I only added 14 qts. this time to see what happened. 14 qts. puts my oil level right at the full mark and I do not see any difference in the way the truck starts or runs in any way. To be honest I put just as much faith in the fact that the owner's manual would give you the proper refill capacity as I do the fact that all dipsticks and dipstick tubes would be EXACTLY the same on all trucks. Just for the record I do change the filter BEFORE putting the drain plug back in so that I get as complete of a drain as possible. I know some oil remains in the engine that does not drain out and I have also read that a COMPLETELY empty engine (rebuild etc.) will hold 18 qts. of oil. What do ya'll think? Have we come to a concrete answer to this question? Thanks in advance!!

I use 15 qts. and that puts the level right at the top of the hatch marks. The dealer also uses 15 qts. I personally think a lot has been made about nothing.

Its still up for grabs I think, anywhere from 13.5-15qts is safe. I myself have always done 15 as well.

I have to say these were my initial toughts exactly. I just had to try it because I had read that some people had improvements in the way their truck ran after reducing the oil capacity to 13.5 to 14 qts. but where I don't see a difference I will just stay with the 15. I think the fact that 15 puts your dipstick to the full mark and 14 puts mine to the mark adds weight to my theory that not all dipsticks/tubes etc. may not be created equal. As Sammy said, either is probably just fine but I think I'll stay with the 15 to be safe. Thanks guys, just wanted your opinions!!

I just don't get the whole debate thing. drain the oil, put oil back in. It's that simple add the new oil to the point where it comes to the top of the hash marks and your good.

I pour in 3 gallons, and about 1/4 of the 4th. Then start and idle for a few minutes, shut it off, check it, and add a little bit at a time until the level is where I want it.

It ain't rocket science.

I let one of my men change the oil one time 16 Qts. We drove it anyway and over that 10,000 miles we had no problems.

If that's on the 7.3 in your sig. no big deal. If you have a 6.0, 10,000 mile oil changes is waaay tooo long. 6.0's shear oil really bad and should be changed every 5,000 miles.

I recall reading that going with 14 quarts helps a little with all of us who have not done the ccv mod???????????. That puts it half way into the crosshatch for me.

I've never done the ccv mod, use 15 qts. and never had a bit of problems pertaining to oil level or contamination.

I have 2 6.0s and the Blackstone reports state I should go to 12,500 miles changes. Maybe you don't use the right oil!

Glad you have two stellar 6.0's. You are one of the few that have posted those results. Actually the only one that I recollect. Good luck on your injectors. Not saying I know everything or anything, you are just in the very small minority.
