I have a 1979 F250. I am planning to run 33-35 inch tires and doing some moderate off-roading. I do not want to spend a lot of money for a lift kit though. I was wondering if i could get a 3" body lift and run front and rear add-a-leafs. Would this be cheaper than buying a rough country 4" lift? ($500). Also with this new idea would i need to change my pitman arm, shocks, etc.? thanks in advance.
go ahead and do the body lift if you're going to do any off roading with 35s that should be enough for them. if you just put extra leafs around it you shouldn't need any of that other stuff.
If i get a suspension lift all I would be gaining is wheel travel right? Also, with a 3" body lift you guys think I would be able to fit 35's under there without a problem?
Screamin T/A, You will gain body height with a suspension lift also. Whatever the advertised height of the suspension lift is, you will gain nearly that in body height.
It depends on whether new springs are used in the lift kit.
Screamin you will NOT gain wheel travel at all if you just do the body lift, your axles will be the same distance from the frame and bump stops. The only thing you get out of a body lift is increased distance from the tire to the body. You will have to consider stretching the clutch linkage if it is a standard transmission, the steering column shaft to the steering gear box may need lengthening, your shifters may be hard to reach without extensions... etc.
