has anyone ever used "rust bullet"? it says you can put on over rust. could i use this on the frame instead of having it blasted? my truck is in good shape and i don't want to completely disassemble the cab, box, and front end from the frame, but i would like to make the frame look better. any responses welcomed.
It's a rust encapsulator, a urethane mastic, like the product offered by POR-15. You suppose to be able to apply it directly over solid rust as long as all the loose flaky stuff is removed. It would be best if you could blast the frame but if you can't or don't want to it should still work as long as the frame is clean.
Once you get it on your skin it will be there until it wears off. I was told you can get it off if you use alcohol before it dries but I haven't tried it. I am using a direct to rust PPG epoxy mastic for the frame and underside of my '37 Buick. So far it looks pretty good.
I just bought a gallon and plan on spraying it under the fender wells and inside my cab like a primer. They have a good video of it being sprayed on an entire vehicle inside and out. They said you can then topcoat right over it. bobj pretty much said it all, don't get the stuff on ya as it has to wear off.
Well I haven't applied mine yet but they have a 10 year guarantee, and the video and instructions on the can say all you have to do is remove all the loose rust scale.
I just bought/ordered a quart of RB and the metal prep spray for bare metal. I have paint failure on the hood and now starting on the cab roof. The primer was said to be failing causing the Gun Metal Gray paint to flake off.
Never the less if I were to RB the frame rails I would consider installing a 2"-3" body lift kit...This will expose and have 360 degree access to most of the frame. If you are going to keep the truck I would sand the rust off with small disc sander.
Let us know how the RB works for you and application method.
I just finished using POR 15 on the rusty oil pan on my 01 SD. I tried a wire brush on a drill, but ended up using a disc sander to remove loose rust. That worked much better. Ditto on the "don't get it on you." POR 15 will come off if you use a lacquer thinner right away. I used that to get it off. Wear old coveralls or old clothing and cover as much of yourself as you can. You might go to a paint shop and get the disposable coveralls. Once that stuff is on and dry, it doesn't come off.
