HAD: 1991 Ranger 4.0L 2wd 5 speed. Tranny packed it in at 463,500ish kms. Tires, brakes and fluid changes over the 15 years i had it.
Gave it to a buddy for a project truck and it turned into a Baja off road only truck.

HAD: 2008 Ranger 4.0 4x4 5 speed. Sold at 165000 kms for my current shuffle buggy.

I have 296,790 miles on my '96 Ranger XLT, but it needs some work now. The reverse seems to have stopped working. It would not engage the other day after sitting for an hour or so. Racing the engine did nothing except maybe raise the temperature of the fluid which was a little above the hatched marks on the stick. After getting it home I was able to back it into a stall.
I wouldn't think the bands would fail that quickly and without some notice.
Anyone got some ideas. I have emailed my mechanic since he changed the fluid no too long ago.

Well, I pulled the trigger and bought A REPLACEMENT Ranger. It's a 2WD, black 2006 XLT with 110K miles, regular cab, 4-cylinder backed by a 5-speed. No frills except A/C, which I may remove if it seems too parasitic to the power department. Thus far, the only other thing I would change to the '06 is that it doesn't have a sliding rear window, which my '94 has and I will likely miss that. I suppose I could always locate a slider for the '06 and slip it in....and I may just do that.

My thoughts are to sell the ol' '94 (with 309K miles) while it is still a good driver and let it go live out the rest of it's life taking some kid to school or someone to work. The box on the '94 has gotten pretty rusty around the rear wheel wheels and catches on my clothing when I'm loading/unloading stuff from it from the side. The cab-to-frame mounts and the radiator support-to-frame mounts are also becoming very rusty and are wanting to collapse...so I've decided I'm not going to repair all those mounts and just let him go.....

I'm pretty certain the wheel bolt circle is the same between the '94 & the '06, so my extra set of wheels for the '94 (outfitted with winter tires) should bolt up onto the '06 without issue, which is a good thing. Once I put a fresh tank of fuel in the '06 and put a few miles on it, I'll report back in with my thoughts.....Later fellas!

Well, I sold the '94 with 309.5K miles; to a nice young fella who will drive him back 'n forth to work at a dairy farm. I'm guessing he'll take good care of the ol' '94. The '94 was getting tired, but he was still a good little truck.

The '06 did benefit from the ol' '94 before he left the yard though. The '94 gave up his wheel jack, his floor mats, his mud flaps and inner rear wheel splash shields. If I could have, I would have switched out the rear window for the '94's rear slider and I would have switched out the third brake light - because the '94's third brake light also had rear cargo lighting that worked off of the dome light switch. I don't understand why Ford would discontinue those good features found on the '94, but not continued on future models like the '06.......?

The '06 has given me 23.5mpg on my last trip with him and no mechanical problems - yet.
