Cleaning Seats

Anybody ever taken off the factory seat covers and put them in a washing machine? I'm pretty sure mine would benefit form it but don't wanna destroy or shrink them.

Talking

Hmmmmm,
You may want to check with a GOOD upholstery shop before doing that. Detail shops generally do a very good job in getting upholstery clean, you may want to talk with them and find out what they use and how they use it.
Good luck and let the rest of us know what you find out.

Will do. They aren't stained or anything but have plenty of dust implanted. I 'spect my truck will smell a little better once they're cleaned.

Might be better off taking them to the dry cleaners.

I wouldn't take the covers off, they have shrunk already and you would have a hard time getting them back on. I have taken the seats out and used upholstery cleaner and a garden hose to clean them, then put them in the sun to dry before I put them back in.

Use a shampooer the kind you can rent from the local grocery store get the chemical cleaner that goes with it steam is your friend when doing upholstery the rental machine should come with a hand attachment thats what I do and you would not believe how much dirt comes out of the seats.

Thanks guys. I've got a Bissel steam cleaner with a hand attachment. It's a pretty weak excuse for an attachment but I reckon I'll give it a go.

Use this stuff. It does wonders.

If you pull the seat covers you'll need hog rings and hog ring pliers to put them back on, and you might as well add heated seats while you have the covers off. I wouldn't use a washing machine if you pull the covers. A garden hose, scrub brush and some soap maybe, but not a machine.

I really think the tuff stuff will surprise you. It will get the dirt out and make the truck smell cleaner.

I used a bucket of carpet cleaner & a scrub brush to clean the seats in my Mustang. I could not believe the results. 13 years worth of grease was removed (I was an auto mechanic). It looked so good, I removed the carpet & washed it too. Sucked all of the detergent mixture out with a wet-vac.

i would shampoo them, if you cant get your hands on a machine you can use some watter with some carpet cleaner and a scrub brush to clean them and then use a shop vac to extract them. after you clean them if you clean them again with straight hot watter they will stay cleaner longer, any left over soap residue can cause dirt to stick to them quicker.

The "secret" is to keep repeating the soaking & extracting procedure until all of the extracted water comes out clear. It will take a while, but the results will be worth it.

I actually took the seat covers off about 2 months ago. kinda a PITA though. Theres several metal rods that keep the cover tight. taking them off and putting them back on was a chore. probably an hour taking them off and 2 putting them on.

But the covers did not shrink a bit. Put them in the washing machine for about 4 cycles, until the water was no longer black and tossed them in the dryer. No problems at all

In your home washing machine? Does it have an agitator? It didn't tear them or weaken the seams at all? What water setting did you use? Sorry to ask so many questions but this is what I really want to do but REALLY don't want to mess them up.

Yes home washing machine. The agitator is the thing with fins right? If so, yes it has one. Normal wash with cold water.

Came out unharmed.
