If it's like my '87 302, it takes an allen key. I'm thinking it was 1/4" inch, but I don't remember. If that's not it I'll go check the 351 in the garage.
Thanks as I know I'll need a socket style allen to crack it and I won't be able to get to a store after I block her up. I believe there is one on each side is that correct?
There is one on each side, but I'm thinking that the passenger side plug is blocked by the starter - the driver side is pretty easy to get to.
Skyfox, I don't have any pictures of it, but if I have some time between work and replacing my leaking hot water heater, I'll try to snap a picture of one of them on my 351 in the garage.
That would be great. I just did a coolant change on my 00 mounty a month or so ago and have been thinking about doing it to the truck as well. This would make things easier for sure.
I always just drain the radiator by using the petcock, and put the garden hose in at the cap. Then I run water through it with the engine running until its clean water coming out and then let it run like that for about 15 minutes.
Sorry for the wait, I had an unexpected hot water heater replacement come up.
Here are the left and right side block drain plugs on a F4TE 351 block. I think the old 302 is similar but I haven't had a chance to crawl under the truck and have a look.
Left:
The header flange is on the left of the picture and the bell housing dowel pin on the right.
Right:
The motor mount is on the left, EGR fitting in the header to the top, and the timing cover on the right of this picture, with the plug just above the wiring loom near the center of the image.
