I have ran two tanks of fuel through my 51 gallon Titan OEM replacement tank now. I have been watching the fill capacity and the gauge/fuel computer operation. I used the trip meter to monitor the accuracy of the operation. Tank was filled until I ran out of patience with the foaming. Here is the latest information:
Filled tank with 36.7 gallons before leaving with fiver
528 total miles, mostly towing
Low fuel light came on after consuming 39.4 gallons and 492 miles
Fuel gauge showed a small eighth reading
Miles to empty had expired about 10 miles before the low fuel light came on
Fuel computer showed consumption at 41.7 gallons
I used the fill method outlined in the other thread by Porthole, slowing the fill rate at 10 gallons less than the fuel used display to slow foaming
Fill went smoother and I believe a little more went in than before at 43.2 gallons
It appears I had around 10 gallons left when the low fuel light came on
It appears that I had about 8 gallons left when I refilled the tank.
The fuel computer is quite accurate in the new tank and at this time the only real way to monitor fuel quantity remaining
The gauge stays full for a long time and then seems to follow the OEM patterns
The Miles to Empty reading is toast. It says 400 miles when you could drive 900 miles easily
I am pleased with the new tank overall. It does what it was designed to do and meets my expectations. I do have a couple of concerns, albeit minor. The foaming issue is a PITA considering the OEM tank does not foam, even using truck stop fill nozzles. You could see the clear non foaming fuel level in the filler neck. You knew it was full. The Titan tank looks like it gets close to as full but it takes some nursing to get that last gallon or so into the tank. Titan told me that it is because you are getting twice as much fuel. I call BS. They said they would get back to me but I have not heard anything. It appears using Portholes "slow down the fill 10 gallons before the computers gallons consumed reading" works to a degree. I was able to get nearly 2 gallons in after it foamed a little.
When I talked with Titan last week they told me I would have 2 more gallons left in the tank when the low fuel light turns on. Mine came on with 6 gallons or so left in the OEM tank so it appears to me that since the light came on with about 10 gallons left, I have 4 more gallons than stock. This inconsistency bothers me a little. Titan needs to let us know more capacity data at lower levels. If they would fill a tank one inch at time and let us know the gallon capacities along with the low fuel light switch activation level it would provide some needed information. Maybe there is a way to modify the bend in the float arm to make it read lower in the tank. 5 gallons in reserve is acceptable, 10 is a bit much. At 20 miles to the gallon, 200 miles is a long way and the false security this provides may bite someone some day. I will continue monitoring the usage to further validate my numbers. As I get more confidence in my research, I will extend the range to a 5 gallon reserve, according to the fuel computer.
In closing, I think the tank is a fair value. I recommend it as a solution to the small OEM tank without giving up bed space. It is nice to be able to buy fuel when you want to, not every 225 miles while towing.
Ric...thanks for the very informative update...I recieved an update from Titan regarding the LWB tank...they are currently building a mold, should have tank available in Dec. early Jan...One thing that concerns me is, using their logic, does an even larger tank, mean more foaming problems.
let me chime in here a little bit. I have a 67 gallon titan in my 01 lwb. I love the tank but here are 3 things I do not. First the big tank being 67 gallon still only uses 2 straps to hold it up I wasn't comfortable with that so I made a bracket for the nose of the tank and I feel more secure with 3 straps know. Number 2 Titan tanks have no baffles in them so with half a tank on the 67 gallon tank it sloshes bad and is somewhat annoying and is followed up with a thump on slowing or stopping. Number 3 it spits upon topping off tank no matter what I do no matter how slow I pump. I have checked the vent line to make sure it wasn't to low. Titan has told me to pull the rollover valve out and drill out vent holes a little bit. It's a little hard to get to know so I have just left it for 2 years know. all in all I love the tank I just wished it had a baffle in it to slow the sloshing. However to pull my rig 600miles without fueling outweighs the downsides good luck with your tanks guys.
I put my tank in yesterday and filled it the first time. I was very careful about measuring how much fuel went in.
10 gallons from two 5 gallon gas cans + two credit card authorizations at a local pump let 50.37 gallons in the tank. Truck was pointed 1 degree up hill and tilted one degree to the passenger side. My fill at the pump was at full speed until it clicked and it didn't spit any fuel. Then I manually added about half a gallon until it did spit out some. There was a Dodge behind me looking perturbed for waiting so long so I didn't try to put any more in. I fit in just over 50 gallons so the tank is slightly larger than advertised.
And yes, the truck warned low fuel with only 10 gallons in it but that seems to be the threshold. The warning stopped on my way to the gas station and the gauge read about an 1/8th.
I dont know why the factory puts such a small tank in a truck designed for the highway anyway what I would like to know how much of a hassle was it to install the new tank and if you did install it yourself did you do it on your back or did you have a lift? or if you had it installed how much did it cost ?would it be possible to put in larger vent lines to prevent foaming?

I installed it by myself on the garage floor. Lifted the back end off the ground with jack stands. It's an easy 2 hour job if you're not messing with lights and cameras. Recording the process doubles the time.

I have access to a very nice service pit. We took about 2 hours of actual work for the installation. Like Epic said, not difficult at all. The tank for the Ford comes with a front support, maybe they learned something. Please reserve my ticket...

I have to say that you guys are great for telling and showing us how this goes. That being said, I was pleasantly surprised at how little the OEM tank foamed compared to my 08. So the foaming will be an issue but sheesh, a 26 gallon OEM tank!!!! I will be doing this one for sure.
Now, how to explain to my wife that I spent this much on a new truck only to have to spend, oh, I don't know, the kids' college funds on upgrades. Deny, deny, deny.
Whats this business with the small tanks?? My long bed has a 37 gallon which seems plenty adequate to me and my 06 short bed had a 26 gallon and my buddies dodge short bed had a 30 gallon. The 06 didn't go far at all while pulling the boat...is this what yall are referring to....having a 26 gallon tank?

No refering to the 37.5 LWB..... When towing in the 10K range it's nice to have 66 gals.
