1987 ranger engine swap what will fit
would the rear end hold it i dont realy want to create the huge snowball effect although im not afraid of work and have a welder and plasma cutter but dont realy wanna do all that just add a good amount of power and torque shoot was thinking of a 50 shot of juice power made simple
2.9s are good for around 400HP with boost, so it should handle a 50 shot alright if you keep the A/F ratio in check.
Whether or not the 7.5" rear end or the A4LD automatic will handle an additional 50HP is another story...

I haven't had any problems with the 7.5 in my Ranger. I'm pushing around 450 hp. But I'm not dumping the clutch at every light either. I'm sure if I took my Ranger to the track all the time, the rear wouldn't hold up. But for the occasional burnout and street driving, I have had no problems at all with the 7.5"....
A 2.9 can handle around 18 PSI of boost with stock internals. Should be good for around 350-400 RWHP. You need good fuel management tuning though.
One guy over at RangerPowerSports ran 20+ PSI, but a bad tune caused detonation and he melted a piston.

The 2.9 was never a popular engine here. You can get camshafts for it from Europe, but they will be expensive. As with any other aftermarket parts for the 2.9.
The only reasonable way to extract more power out of a 2.9 is either boost it via turbo/supercharger or use nitrous.
The 2.9 will accept basically any injector type, but bigger injectors are useless without a proper computer retune.

More question about
I would favor the 5.0 but like Old93 said, probably in your case the best bang for the buck would be to find a good 4.0. I take it you're looking for torque as opposed to HP. 5.0's fit pretty good. little wiring and very little fabrication required. You do have to upgrade a lot of things though. 4x4 or no?

5.0 fits nice.... lol.... But like everyone said, I bit more complicated, not hard though.... Mine still has the stock 2.9L motor mounts.
