i need to know the location of all the computers in my truck that would be harmed by welding on it. most gassers have the pcm and everything runs off that so i just unhook that. not sure if it is the same.
with welding its different because the power and ground are making a complete circuit through the frame
Which theoretically means arcing between piston rings and engine block in addition to electrical nightmares.
General rule of thumb is to keep the ground clamp as close to the stinger as possible. I'd also disconnect the batteries, and in addition to the PCM, I'd pull the fuse block and unplug all the connectors from the back of the fuses. Or maybe just pull all the fuses and relays.

I've welded on hundreds of cars, never did anything more than unhook the batteries. Now we just hook a little surge protector deal to the battery. Never had ANY computer problems. Cars catching on fire is a different story though
Never hurts to go a little overboard, especially with the cost of an IDM. Can't add much more then Chris did. Where are you welding to the truck Jim? The GEM is a pain to get it where its located (under the dash below the radio).
I'm already 3 inches lower in the front and if I went another 2" the I beams would be hitting the engine girdle.
When said and done ill be laying rocker in the ground

^^^^ This.
I had my fifth wheel mounts welded to my truck's frame. The guy who did it used an angle grinder to make a nice shiny bare spot on the frame near the weld for the ground. THAT becomes the circuit loop. The guy said he has welded on dozens of cars and trucks over the years and never unhooked a computer or a fuse and never had a problem.
