Performace questions

I have a 96 ranger with 2.3l and a five spd. I am looking for any performance upgrades, i am planning imptoved intake and extake. I had a friend of mine who said he rammed aired his ranger, it worked for a while but had problems. somthing about computer not reading air intake right. I just want to do something different than the norm and thought that would be a fun project. Any ideas? any help will be appreciated.

Performace questions

This is talking from a little research i did before just swaping a 302 in. There are a few things. First off I don't know how he got a 'ram air effect' most of the ram air kits that you can buy aftermarket are absoultly uselss because the actual 'raming' of the air would only happen at very high speeds 90+.. the whol advantage of the ram air on lets say mach 1 mustangs and comaros is that it is a perfect cold air intake as well as a slight ram effect. but... here is what i almost did.

First i would look for an old 2.3L turbo head. You can come across these reasonalby at junkyards. Then Purchase the turbo. Intake and exhaust. The stock turbo will do just fine. Purchase a cam with a slightly higher duration and lift. Lastly if you have time I believe that you gasket match the intake. I know on your motor the intake ports are alot smaller then to ports on your head. This is very restrictive. But it helps for torque on bottom end. It is a general rule of thumb that a motor that dosen't breath well well produce torque for example desiels and dual plane intakes on 351 and 5.0s.

Lastly get you chip burned so that you computer dosen't freak out. Some dyno shops will help you with this.

This might sound expensive but it is really not. they are all old factory parts that you can find junkyards. There is also alot of info on the web about turboing 2.3L rangers.

Sorry i rambled on. I am just opinionated

First off, you are going to find that turbo'ing your engine is not the cheapest, not the most effective way out.
For starters, you can only run about 7-8lbs boost without grenading the stock pistons. Second, you will have to change your computer.

I forgot to mention that I already had the turbo motor from an older car. that would handle the boost.. Now that I have read up on it. I am much happier with the v8.
