Unhappy Gasket removal question

I just pulled the water pump off my 5.0...managed to do it without snapping any bolts...but the gasket pieces are so melded to the timing cover that I've spent 2 hours trying to scrape and coax them off. I've combinations of scraper, razor blade, softener (acetone, carb cleaner, goo-gone) and it is such a slow process it's going to take many more hours.

Any suggestions for either softening the material or using other scrapers? I'm thinking about some kind of dremel attachment, but don't want to damage the aluminum mating surface.

Thanks for any help. I'm going out to scrape some more before the rain comes. I'll be checking back shortly.

Get a Painters helper tool. Like a thick putty knife with sharp edge, pointy edge, curves etc. Chrome is better since it doesn't rust and also seems to be smoother and take off gaskets easier.

See this Amazon page for pictures...

A wire brush on a hand drill also works well. Steel will scratch a little but works faster than brass which deosn't scratch.

Maybe spraying with a solvent or even WD40 will soften the gasket a little.

You can get the painter helper or brushes at a good hardware store.

Good Luck,

Use a wire wheel on a bench grinder. It is clean in minutes. As for the block it's scrape and wire wheel on a hi speed drill or angle grinder.

Use Permatex Gasket Remover. Spray it on wet and let it sit for 5-10 minutes and the gasket will soften up. The stuff you have been using dry too fast to really soften the gasket much less penetrate the top surface down to the metal.

My favorite weapon for all gaskets is a 1" Stanley wood chizel that is used for absolutely nothing else (I don't want any nicks in the edge to cause scoring)

Thanks for all the replies. I got rained out on finsishing the job, will go for it on Tuesday I hope.

I think I'm going to try the Permatex stuff. The guy at the local shop gave me a deal on it, since the stuff that's on the shelves is new to the market (low VOC) and he doesn't know if it works as well as the old stuff.

I'll let you all know too.

I use a 1/2 inch one myself. I just pulled the water pump and timing cover off the Polara. The engine face just needed the wood chisel as the original gasket was only sealed around the water passages and bolt holes. The only thing that could work in the cramped quarters. Permatex went on the other side of the timing cover where the water pump was completely sealed around the original gasket. Of course my two cans of Permatex are about 8 years old.

So the Permatex worked, for about 2 seconds then the can clogged. What came out did a decent job of softening gasket so I could scrape it off with the razor blade.

So I made my own gel concoction out or liquid laundry soap and gasoline...worked not as well as the Permatex, but better than anything else I previously tried.

Got it done, new thermostat too and we're rolling fine, finally.

If you ever have the need to do this again, find a local Print Shop or Printing Supplier and get your hands on some "Hancolite" or "Ancolite" (same stuff/different distributor).

Caution. . . it contains Toulene, which is a KNOWN carcinogen!!!!

However, this will remove any gasket/glue/etc. that you need removed.

Also note: DO NOT get this on your car/truck's paint! It will make paint BUBBLE and will make the primer under it do the same.
I've (literally) seen 15 year old paint bubble up and was able to wipe off, down to the metal!!

This stuff ain't cheap, either. The last our shop bought, was $45.00 per gallon!
