I have a 98 Explorer XTL V8 Fulltime 4 wheel drive. The noise appears to come from the front on the drivers side. Its a grating sound that sounds like a wire grating against some rotating or moving part, such as the wheel. I can only hear it when slowing down to stop. You cannot hear it when accelerating.
Thanks for the reply. I had the front brake pads replaced at about 56k (have 63k now). I had the same thought, but it prove to be the problem. Thanks again.
I had the same problem on my 97 AWD Limited. I changed a part they call the prop shaft, a short shaft under the drivers seat that connects to the drive shaft. If it sounds like a popcorn machine making popcorn, here is the remedy. First of all it isnt the shaft. You or a mechanic, drain the oil from the transfer case. Refill the case using an additive and a different weight oil. Not sure of the additive, maybe an anti-wear or something. As soon as I pulled it out of the garage the noise went away. The sound you hear may be radiating through the shaft, but is actually from the case. Hop ethis helps, its a cheap fix, the shaft was $250.00
Thanks for that reply. I'm going to check it out and see if that is the problem. It would be nice to have such a simple fix. Thanks again for the suggestion.
Not Yet. Too many things on my plate right now, but will get to this project soon. I've been trying to find what type of additive to put in the transfer case. Also trying to find an anti-ware additive. Thanks for your followup.
