Im not sure whats wrong with it... I don't do it though just because that is wasted fuel. If it take 10, 15 or 20 mins. of Idling to get warmed up that is a huge waste of fuel. I let my glow plugs run for about a Min on cold mornings. I scrap the Ice or just wipe off the windows so I can see. Then I start it let it Idle 2-3 mins. while I go back in and Get my coffee and Lunch. Drive easy on it and after about 1 or so miles the truck is warmed up.

I don't let mine Idle that long just because of the above. takes start to finish 5 or so mins including getting down the road.

I think the thinking about idling cold being not so great is it takes _forever_ to get up to operating temperature and your oil won't reach appropriate thickness.

My problem in Cal is my morning drive is straight down hill 2300'. Takes about 20 minutes to hit the freeway and that's about then the temp gauge decides to wake up.

The new ford diesel when you idle them in the cold rpms will go up by them self why is that???I never plug in my truck yet I live in nj .I get in wait for the light to go off and start her up . Wait about a min and go since I don't want to wake up half off my neigberhood I take it easy on it till the gauge goes up to Normal temp .and when the truck is cold I guess the ebov don't open so truck has no pick up

Our diesel work van does that. When its cold the RPMs go up and it has NO power. I have to be careful pulling out into traffic from the shop because it has no power.

Cut Key

Used to do this in police cars so if you had to jump in and go in a hurry you didn't fumble around looking for your keys. Take a key and cut the head off. Drill a tiny hole in the top and put a little loop of bare copper wire. Then stick it in the ignition. From looking in nobody knows you don't need a key to start it. Oh yeah, the little piece of copper wire is there so you have something to catch a dental pick on should you ever want to remove it.
