So my gas tank is not leaking but it is full of trash. what is the best way to clean it out?It keeps stoping up the fuel filter. or is it best to just replace it?oh yeah im very new to posting this is the only site I have ever posted on, so please bare with me thanks.
i guess it may depend on what you mean by "trash". you could clean the tank out by first draining it, then dropping it. pop the sending unit out, and then rinse it out with soap and water. But "trash" doesn't just get into a gas tank. I suspect when you drop the tank you'll figure out what got in there if you haven't already.
Also, when you have the sending unit out take a look at the strainer on the sending unit and see what kind of condition it is in.
If you can afford it, the new tank is definitely the easiest way to go. Last time I checked they where around $100-$120. Otherwise you will have to pull the tank, drain it, and there are some places where I live that will steam the tank out with a steam gennie.

OH YES, just replace it. I think mine was $80-$90 at rockauto.com. When I pulled my old one I thought I would have to call a Haz-Mat team! The ooze in the bottom of the tank was gross and the smell nearly knocked me out. You'll also need that filter sock for the sending unit.
Thanks folks . The trash seems to range from sand size to flakes of rust thumb nail size. this truck sat for two years after my father who own it died . Im restoring and driveing it at the same time.Im useing outboard motor tank at present need to replace rotted wood in the bed also!
What color is the gas coming out of the tank? My front tank on my '81 sat for six years unused...just a month or two ago I started trying to use it again. No luck, the gas in tank was tan, even the fresh fuel I added in. Plugged my fuel filter solid.
I always thought that the junk got in there over years of having gas pumped into it. Perhaps the pumps at some stations didn't filter their gas as well as others, and stuff got through. I mean, these trucks are 25-30 years old, that's plenty of time for junk to accumulate even if it were small amounts at a time.
to the kirbyman there was only about two gallons of gas in the tank before I filled it up with fresh gas. I guess I will try cleaning the tank .Just left NAPA store fhey said the shiping cost would be another eighty bucks! on top of the cost of tank. will let yall know how it goes.
i shopped around before i bought my tank. advance auto parts was by far the cheapest and free shipping. poke around google and you'll easily find a 20% code as well. shipping was quick and i had it in about 2 days.
