ok well my *new* '96 is comming up on its first oil change under my ownership, it has 166,*** miles on it and i have heard rumors on bad things happening when going from conventinal oil to synthetic with more than 100,000 miles on the clock.
i ran valvoline max life in my '87, but that is what it was running when i bought it, so now my question.
with that many miles if i switch to the max life in this motor will i get one of those "oh ****" moments after the change?
i have no problem with convential oil but the synthetic in the '87 seemed like it made the truck run much better..
Just my 2 cents, Stick with conventional oil. I run rotella 15w-40 in both of mine. When it get's really cold, I switch to 10w-30 rotella. I had terrible results switching to syn. Sounded like ball bearing rolling around in the engine. Went back to conventional and hasn't done it again. Have also heard of seals leaking on older vehicles with high miles that hadn't leaked before, only when they switched to synthetic.
But as said before, everyone will have different opinions on this. If money isn't an object, you can give it a shot. $4+ versus $2+.
I switched to synthetic in my 93 after a re-build. My 70 Econoline went 275,000 on conventional. Regular maintenance matters more than synthetic or conventional.
Rotella still has a fair amount of zinc in it. Zinc is a critical lubricant for non-roller camshaft equipped vehicles. Most oils designed for gasoline automotive use are cutting back on zinc in the formula.
Personally I use Red Line synthetic oil in all my vehicles (4) regardless of miles on the engine. I acquired my current '92 F350 w/5.8L engine about 2 years ago with 150k miles on it. No ill effects after I put in Red Line such as leaks, noises, increased oil consumption, etc. Red Line rates their oil to protect for up to 12 months or 15,000 miles. I change the oil filters in between my annual oil changes. I save the old oil for use in the chainsaw as bar/chain lubricant.
i think i may swap to the synthetic when i change it out. really i don't see the problem with it. My truck has 167,*** miles as of today, would you consider that a lot of miles?
I believe it is a personal decision. I have switched several of my vehicles with high miles over to synthetic and never had a leaking problem. I change oil twice a year now, spring and fall, never had a problem.
