Ok first let me say I am a wood butcher not a mechanic. That being said I just replaced u joints, ball joints, rotors and pads on my 99 f20 sd 4x4 diesel. It ran smooth for four days. Today on way from one job to next my brakes started vibrating when you touch pedal. It is the abs system. I dont have any more cash to throw at this thing but need to get to work as I missed last week while working on it. ( it takes me days to do what a shop can do in no time). My question is can I pull the 60 amp fuse to the abs system under hood so it is drivable for now? any advise apprciated. What would upset this abs as i did not touch it or remove vacume lines etc while working on front end. Frustrated carpenter for sure...........
Thank you for your responce. I do have an abs light in dash. Only comes on when truck is started then goes off. When I push break pedal down it vibrates and makes a lot of noise, but no abs light comes on at this point. Manuel says two 5 amp fuses for 4wd abs. I pulled those from under dash fuse box but did not correct issue so I put them back. I see there is a 60 amp fuse in box under hood. I am hoping some one can tell me if I pull this will it temporarily solve break issue with out interfering with anything else but abs. Your thoughts ?
I dont think my issue is warped rotars. If I start the truck ( in park ) then step on the brake pedal it bounces and you can hear noise and feel pedal bouncing. The rotar are not moving at this point, that is why I thought it was abs.
pull the fuse and see what happens I think it might be your hydraboost when you did your brakes did you use the good ford silicone lube on those %&*@#$! slide pins reg. anti siez<?........ anything but that they will stick
The abs light only comes on when the truck is first started , then goes off as usual. Where would i get the codes read, the dealership ? They already got 85 dollars for nothing and let my truck sit even though I had an appointment. I cant afford to go to the dealer again, so I guess I pull the fuse and see what happens unless anyone has a better idea ???
Sounds like you may have a power steering pump or hydroboost unit going out, the abs cannot activate without the truck in motion. Check the fluid level in your pump. Also, check for poor or high steering effort.
Fishin 76,
That makes sence about abs off when not in motion. I did check the brake fluid level and it was fine. I also checked( and added a zip tie) connections of hose to brake assembly as one seemed loose so I did not know if it was a vacume issue or something stupid I am overlooking. The brakes work fine( normal stop ) and it acts like abs when you push brake pedal down harder. I dont know if I should just drive it to work tomorrow or if that will make it worse.????
Pull the 60 amp fuse. It will turn off the abs feature on the truck, and you will still have regular use of the brakes, just not abs.
When you start the truck, the abs pump will do a self test, you should be able to hear it, and that is when you get the light. If I understand correct.
I would unplug the battery for a while and have the computer reset, hook back up and then go for a bit of a spin and see if that helps.
I think while you were pushing apart the calipers to get the new pads on you might have dislodged and pushed some krud back in the brake line that is now stuck somewhere. If the computer reset does not work, you might want to bleed the brakes some and see if that solves it.
I had a similar issue, and even purchased the Auto Enginuity scanner to help solve the issue. I was tired of getting a dealer to charge to read the codes every time. The AE, with the ford add on does read the abs. I ended up cycling the abs pump thru the scanner close to a dozen times and it freed what ever, and have had no problems since. I also after that did flush out and replace all the old brake fluid with new.
I had the 60 amp fuse pulled and was driving this way for over a month till I ordered and rcved the AE scanner and was able to get to fixing the issue.

While I don't suggest you drive like this, with no abs for an extended amount of time, it will get you by, just don't procrastinate and take too long to get it looked at and taken care of.
that little loose hose you described is important as it is the return for the hydraboost system? The "power" brakes on a diesel, use the same system as the power steering, using the pump for the boosting. I assume fluid level in the power steering resevoir is full of ATF? Maybe try a flush and bleed first if it doesn't help, I believe you might be looking at a new hydraboost cylinder.
Not sure if you got it fig. out yet, but depending on how you do your brakes, you might have got air in the lines.
LIke WALLZ said, try bleeding the brakes.
