Looking to buy, need help!!
That said, it looks like your in the market for a 2003-2006 Gasoline powered F250 Crew cab. Find one with less than 100k in your price range. If you stay above 2005, you also get the 5R110 trans. (5 speed auto). Any of them will be a good choice for you, IMO. Of course, 2wd is less $$$ than 4wd, but for plowing, I would stick to a 4wd.
If by a long time, your looking to keep the truck for 300K+ miles, I recommend a 2002 to 2003 F250 4x4 with the 7.3L diesel. Maintence is a little more, but the engine is good for 400k+ miles. MPG's on 7.3L are usually good, in the 14-19 mpg range highway. The gas trucks are a little lower depending on use. Parts are very fair priced for any of the trucks.
Good luck hunting!
You have come to the right place. In my opinion, the best thing you can do is grab a coffee (or a beer...) and start reading these forums. There is a ton of excellent information on the good, the bad and the ugly of these trucks.
Now, on to my opinion of what I think you should look for in your price range:
2005 and up 5.4L 4x4 with as low mileage as you can afford. I would avoid trucks that have been used to plow.
The reason i recommend 2005+ is because the gas engines went from 2-valve to 3-valve and gained a good bit of power. Also the transmission went from the 4-speed 4R100 to a more robust 5 speed 5R110. They also updated the front end to go from leaf springs to coil springs which improved the turning radius (nice for plowing in tight places).
Hopefully that will give you some things to start researching.
Good luck, and let us know what you decide on.
