my new 00 Expy with less than 500 miles on it has a vibration that doesn't feel like a tire or wheel. Hard to tell if it is from the front or rear of the vehicle. It starts at about 72 mph through about 78. Anyone else had the same problem?
I HAVE A '98 EXPY EB 4X4 WITH 25K MILES. MINE IS DOING THE SAME THING,AND HAS BEEN DOING IT SINCE I HAVE HAD IT. I DIDN'T TAKE IT BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP RIGHT AWAY, I DECIDED TO DRIVE IT A WHILE TO SEE IF IT WOULD GET WORSE(IT DIDN'T).
I TOOK IT TO THE DEALERSHIP LAST WEEK TO HAVE IT CHECKED OUT. THEY COULD NOT LOCATE THE SOURCE OF THE VIBRATION. THEY CHECKED THE DRIVESHAFT RUNOUT, IT WAS OK. THEY ROTATED THE DRIVESHAFT TO SEE IF THAT WOULD HELP,BUT IT DIDN'T. THEY TOLD ME ITS NOT ANYTHING TO BE CONCERNED WITH SINCE ITS NOT THAT BAD.(ANY VIBRATION TO ME IS BAD!!!)IF YOU HAVE YOURS CHECKED OUT AND THEY DO FIND THE PROBLEM PLEASE E-MAIL ME TO LET ME KNOW WHAT'S CAUSING THE VIBRATION SO I CAN TAKE MINE BACK TO HAVE IT REPAIRED.
Railman, I'm going to take it to the dealer tomorrow. I don't think the problem will be fixed. This sounds like something that is a pretty big problem with alot of Fords. After the dealer looks at it and doesn't fix the problem, I'll go ahead and buy the custom wheels I want and get the exhaust mods done, so at least that will eliminate problems with the wheels or exhaust. I'll keep you posted.
Replaced the stock muffler with a Midas Performance muffler like I had on my 97 F150. Vibration appears to have been slightly reduced. Still there on occasion, but not as bad.
I'm the parts manager for a Ford dealership, and of all the Expys that come through here, only a scant few have vibration problems. My suggestion would be to rotate tghe tires front to back and see if the problem doestn't go away. If it does, look to your tires. If not, it could be on of many things. We recently had an F150 in here for the same symptoms you describe. The cure for that truck was a whole new driveshaft, even though the old one had no visible dents and balanced out perfectly. Good luck.
MY '98 EXPY HAS 26K MILES ON IT AND I HAVE HAD THE TIRES ROTATED AND BALANCED 3 TIMES, BY 3 DIFFERENT TIRE SHOPS AND THE VIBRATION IS STILL THERE, SO I HAVE RULED OUT A TIRE/WHEEL PROBLEM. IT SOUNDS LIKE ITS COMING FROM THE REAR OF THE VEHICLE. I'M BEGINNING TO BELIEVE IT IS A SLIGHT DRIVESHAFT IMBALANCE,ONLY SHOWING UP BETWEEN 70-78 MPH. NOW IF I CAN JUST CONVENCE MY LOCAL FORD DEALERSHIP TO REPLACE THE DRIVESHAFT IS MY NEXT DILEMMA.
I did some experimenting yesterday and found the vibration to be varible with the throttle. I could ease off the trottle and the vibration would lesson, back on and it increased. Put the vehicle in neutral and it decreased. That was at the slower speeds of 40-50 mph. I leave for a trip to Texas tomorrow. Maybe I can figure out more on the trip. I just hate to take it to the dealer and lose it for 3 weeks while they fail to figure it out.
I have a 99 Expedition(3000 miles) with the same high speed vibration. (76 mph to be exact)Went round and round with dealer convinced them to upgrade tires to Michelin. It rode a great deal better but still has that 76 mph vibration. Going to new dealer where friend just had work done on his Expedition with same problem. Will keep you posted.
HAVE YOU GUYS HAD ANY LUCK CURING THE VIBRATION PROBLEM ON YOUR EXPYS? I HAVE TAKEN MINE TO THREE DIFFERENT DEALERSHIPS TO HAVE IT CHECKED OUT. BUT I GET THE SAME OLD STORY, "IT'S A TIRE OUT OF BALANCE". I CAN'T GET IT THRUOGH THERE HEADS THAT WHEN I ROTATE AND BALANCE THE TIRES THE VIBRATION IS STILL THERE AND IS COMING FROM THE REAR OF THE VEHICLE!! IF IT IS A BAD TIRE OR WHEEL THE VIBRATION SHOULD MOVE TO THE FRONT OF THE VEHICLE WHEN THE TIRE IS ROTATED. I HAVE ABOUT 10-15K MILES OF TREAD LEFT ON THE BF GOODRICH TIRES, HOPFULY NEW TIRES WILL HELP BUT I DOUBT IT WILL BECOUSE I DON'T THINK IT'S A TIRE OR WHEEL,I THINK ITS IN THE DRIVESHAFT OR REAREND. WHAT DO YOU GUYS THINK THE PROBLEM IS?
was looking through some of these old postings and noticed the large number of problems with this item. i just spent three weeks with this problem on a used 98 eb i just purchased. i purchased a new set of bridgestone duelers hl's the day i bought the vehicle. at over seventy i had a slight vibration. balanced by firestone FOUR different times during this time. the last time i drove to a discount tire store the next day and had them rebalanced. (the manager of this store was sooo helpful) turns out that firestone (two different stores), were using weights that will not stay on the ford rims. all four tires were in balance on the sides that had weights still on, out of balance on the side that had no weights. (they had already fell off) it has been four days and everything is still smooth as glass. i had the option of getting new michelen's at discount tire. (firestone offered to pay for discount's balance job or give me my money back) knowing the firestone offer, discounts mgr balanced them for me himself and was honest enough to tell me that there was nothing wrong with the bridgestones, only the balance job. he was the most honest helpful person i have met in any business. needless to say that they will have all of my future business!!! feel free to e-mail me a tigacff22(No Email Addresses In Posts!) if you have any questions or comments.
hope this helps you guys out

Look on the Explorer post.Several posts on this topic.Several of them with the same problem had bent axles.I have an Explorer with the same problem from day 1.Belive Ford needs to check their vendor for axles. One post said to have the dealership do a vibration test which will isolate the problem.Merry Christmas you all.
Went through all the same problems and resolutions that everyone else has on this forum. Gave up on the Ford dealer and went to my nearest Lincoln dealer. He had F-150s and Navigators with sae problem. After at least 4 months and Ford engineers helping they isolated to transmission. Transmission changed and everything is great It took a lot of patience, but it paid off...Good Luck.
Ok what's after the Trans. I got a new one in there and its still there. I going to start on it this weekend. Im sick of waiting for frod to get it. I think it in the front. Put it up on the rack, lift it, start it, put it in gear. If I find it, I'll pull the front drive shaft, 99 have auto 4X4, And see if it go byby.
I have 99 Expy . Went through the tire balancing, rotation, even new tires. Nothing changed. Dealer finally changed drive shaft and vibration went away. Mine was at exactly 76 mph.Old drive shaft balnaced out OK on machine . Go figure. Dealer also stated they changed rotors, rims and even a transmission on other trucks to fix vibrations. Good luck, Bearman
