I plow lots and drives in MI's UP w a 99 f-250 reg cab 5.4 w 4.30's from a v-10 rig. I use HALF the fuel dollars as I do when I have to jump in my 97 f-350 7.3 w 3.55's. The rear ratio is prob what kills the fuel mileage but... the turbo on your diesel never really gets to spool up and give you any boost / power / efficiency.
And if I gotta stomp on the 5.4 just before I am gettin' bogged down in the thick stuff - she jumps! Not to mention the front axle weight savings.
I believe the ford owners manual recommends against a plow on the 7.3 ( 1997 anyway) but they limit a trailer to 9200 lbs too so what do they know. A F-350 w a 7.3 and the mgtwr is only 9200#?!?! Come on.
I've plowed with a 06' F250 5.4 with 3.73 and it did a fine job plowing. The only time I noticed that the truck was underpowered was when I would be commuting between jobs. Between my 800lbs plow and 600lbs of sand bags in the bed... it def took a little time to get it up and going compared to my 6.0 and my 6.4. In terms of reliability... the 5.4 3valve will not let you down.
I think he wants to know why you would ever drive 95mph with a 800lbs piece of steel mounted to your truck. I think he wants to know why you would be so reckless.
