i just went thru this problem on my truck. i ended up doing same as 69cj did, took alt that read only 13v and exchanged it and took batteries to autozone to get charged cause my charger took a dump on me. they both load tested fine, but were both at 12.4. they need charging, i was getting the battery light after engine start though. now been going 4 weeks and no lights yet.

might want to check your ficm low voltage is bad for it. maybe someone else will chime in with more knowledge on that issue.

I had the dealership check the FICM voltage recently, it was at 47.5. Also, fuel pressure was 58 valve closed, 50 valve open.

I will know more tomorrow, being checked by my shadetree guy, small shop, good mechanic...but not a diesel guy. He is strictly looking at the batteries, alternator, starter, etc. If he shows any codes related to the "chuffing", back to the dealership for those.

After several days of testing and looking for problems, my mechanic buddy decided with me that the best thing to do was replace both batteries with AGM type batteries, he says the alternator is good to go. I am going to return the Optimas to the dealer here, who says he will do his "specialized" charging protocol to see if they are indeed bad. I never saw them above 12.45 and 12.49 with a full charge on them. They are under full warranty so if they are bad, I will end up with 2 new ones, and sell them on Craigslist, or wherever.

Unfortunately, I also wanted him to check for any codes, he pulled the batteries and replaced them which I guess removed all codes, none are present. I plan on lots of good, hard driving over the weekend to see how she runs, before I head to the cold country for some late season fishing.

Finally, he suggests a small solar charger for when I am out in the boonies in the deep cold, just as a safety backup.

Good idea but if you need it then you still have a problem.

Can't hurt to have a spare truck either but that doesn't solve the problem.

You could fill the bed up with jerry cans full of fuel and never shut it off!
