At 119,000, it failed to start. No starter action at all with good batteries. Also tried to jump it and it still would turn over at all. Towed to Dealer. $1800 later, I have a new starter and a fuel injector driver. All was well for a bit and then about 2 weeks later, it would not start due to very low batteries. Got a jump and all was well and I made it home.
Checked the batteries and both had the little charge indicators showing red. BTW, these are the ones that came in it in 2003. Since they were toast and would barely take enough of a charge to start it, I replaced both ($180). No worries, right?
Starting was fine and it ran OK, but the lights would become yellowish after an hour or so of use. Checked alternator output and the best it would do under load was 13v and it had to be at 2000 RPM to get that. Replaced that today with a NAPA Platinum rebuild that has a lifetime warranty for $239. It kicks out 14.2v at an idle so all should be well in Power Stroke land for awhile.
Moral of the story- when you have electrical issues in these trucks, don't stop looking until you find the root cause of the problem. The truck had a failing alternator which screwed up the starter, both batteries and maybe the injector driver.
Hope this is helpful to someone.
Cheers to all and Happy Halloween.
Mistake #2, not coming to FTE when you were having truck issues.
You could have had your starter tested and taking it off and put on yourself, saving you 100s.
Batteries that old, most likely needing replacing. Standard to replace both at the same time.
Your alternator might have been easily fixable.
Not dissing you at all, past is past, just letting you know that FTE is here to help out when questions arise where YOU can get your truck up and running and not rely on others to fix your truck .... and Take Your Money....
