AC ISSUES, 03 F250

My AC has been acting up. It blows real cold most of the time, but every now and then the clutch kicks out (even at highway speeds), and it blows warm. If I accelerate, the clutch engages, and it blows cold again. If I deccelerate, it stays disengaged. At idle, it will do the same, sometimes cold, sometimes no clutch. I added a can of 134 last week, didn't make a difference. I hooked up the manifold gages today, and the low side was 45psi, the high side was 160psi. I let a little freon out of the system until the low side read 35psi, but the high side went down to 150psi. If I'm correct, the low side should be between 30 - 40, the high side 225 - 250????. Any idea why I'm seeing 35 and 150???
Thanks

First off - don't start adding a can of freon without checking both low & high system pressures. Never. Overcharging is a real problem as often as undercharging. You have gages, so don't go adding freon unless you need to.

Your truck is 7 yrs old. Right in the zone of clutch wear. Check the clutch gap first. If it is worn enough, you are probably in the 0.025-0,030" gap range (or worse). If so, pull the clutch, and pull a shim to get it back into the meat of the range (around 0.020" or less). If it is at the upper end of the range it can slip a bit, especially when hot.

If that doesn't pan out, then you may be looking at a compressor on its last legs or something else.

I actually removed the washer last Friday, and now the clutch doesn't cycle constantly. Now the air seems to work ok. Still doesn't explain the low reading on the high side???
