Hey everybody, I am working on a 1960 F100, it currently has a 223CID Mileage Maker I6 engine, Equipped with Manual trans. I am wanting to replace that engine with a a V8, I am only looking to go back with a Ford Engine, I will also be needing a trans. I have a 360/390 on hand, unclear on what CID it actually is. Does anyone have any suggestions or preferences on what I should go with?
Mafia-Which manual tranny do you have, and are you wanting to go install a manual, or an automatic? If you want the correct 8 cyl, that would be a Y-Block,in which case you should probably visit the Y-Block section of FTE.There will be guys there,as well as here in the 48-60 section, that can tell you which engine/transmissions fit with minimal problems.I'm thinking that if you're satisfied with your current tranny,it may be most cost effective to find a Y-block v8,with correct Bell housing, and bolt that right back to your existing tranny.I don't know much about this, admittedly.
If you're wanting to change both tranny and engine, well, now you're talking real money.I'm thrifty(cheap),and believe it's usually best for me not to stray too far from stock.Do what pleases you - and your wallet.Good luck, and, by-the-way, Welcome to FTE.
IDK you may be wrong on pricing, On the odo its showing 85000 miles, Idk what trans I have, i just know its a manual on the tree, i only have part of the steering column, i think i will need most of the entire of the steering system from the end of the column to the hub. I have started to look at rebuild kits for that engine and so far i have only found one and the price for that is $1330.25 without tax and ship, I think it would be cheaper to rebuild the v8 i have. On the 223 I may need another head, due to rust, flakes of rust in the head visible through the thermostat hole. not sure what I ant to do, it isn't locked up, just checked.
I put a 390 with c/6 in a 60 f-100 to replace the 6/cy and 4/speed a few years back. It fit good and made a big improvment ove the original. I used it because thats what I had on hand in the parts yard behind my shop.

Same on my 62. And rust flakes in the cooling system isn't hurting the rest of the engine. If ya rebuilt it and have the block cleaned that will all come out. The machine shop that dips the block can check it for cracks and stuff and tell ya if it is okay.
ok, what complications did you run into in mounting the 390 engine in along with c6? I also have a 429 or 460 engine i'm thinking about installing. but whatever engine i go with I'm gonna rebuild it. I don't know the condition of the 360, it has been sitting for years, im gonna try and turn the motor monday along with the 429/460.
