Going to put the beast on the dyno Saturday at Judgement Day in winchester ky. I don't know if I drive or if they will have a driver. But if I drive what should do for gear choice and should I power brake it to load the motor or just stomp it and go?
Honestly as much as I've been around motorsports I've never been to a wheel dyno. Any input would be great.
4th gear will show you more torque, 5th gear will show more horsepower generally. Everytime I have been on a dyno I run in 4th gear, then 2 runs in 5th gear. I always ease up to the gear I want and get it around 1500 RPM. From there I bring the brakes and the fuel a little bit and you will see boost start to rise. Once you see the boost come up to about 5 psi or more let it loose. Thats a quick overview of it anyways.
You will figure it out, but here is a video of a 4th gear pull. You can see on the screen that I start loading the turbo at 1400 RPM, let it spool on the brakes for a bit and as soon as I got enough boost for it to light, I let it rip which was around 1800 RPM.
Travis has got you spot on. I have dyno'd with and with out the brakes and it is not that much of a difference. Mostly a few more lbs. of tq with the brakes.
Just have fun with it.
4th gear is the real gear to do it in because that gear is 1:1 so it is the most accurate number.
Yep, being that 4th gear is 1:1, it's a good choice. I always run a couple runs in 5th just to see what kind of horsepower I can get from it. I usually get a couple more horsepower out of 5th, but lower torque than in 4th and that's why I run both gears. I'm not sure what it is about a dyno, but it's kinda fun to get on there and let the coal roll.
Just remember, Dyno is an estimate, its not a 100% exact science.
Specially if its not loaded right and such as well.
Travis and Neal know how to run the Dyno.
Easier to load up with the brake, saves time. You barely need to touch it, you can practice loading the motor with the brake while driving slow. Just stick it in 4th and watch the gauge. I barely have to touch the brakes and up it goes.
