need help id'ing this part

well i was backing up my trailer and it was getting real hard to get into Reverse OR Low, i was in 4Lo backing up.. so im guessing its low on fluid, so i wanted to fix the leak before filling it back up

my mechanic told me my transmission (zf-650) was leaking from the top of the transmission so i finally looked under my boot and noticed a bolt of backed out. so i unbolted it and there wasn't a gasket there.. so i put red RTV and started to bolt it back down.. then i saw this. anyone know were to just get the rubber piece or what its called?

PN F81Z-7277-AC called a 'boot' in the Ford catalog I purchased it from. List $19.98, and it just pops out after you have the shift tower retainer removed. I got it from Ford. The gasket I used was made from Right Stuff by Permatex, works great! Mine boot was slit as well and I noticed fluid leaking out of my trans from the top. Fixed it and was good.

I am not sure aftermarket wise on who would even have it given how rare ZF-6's are. The GMs used a ZF-6 but had a different tower. Try partsguyed if you can wait for it to be shipped, he has Ford parts for less $. I have been burned on non factory parts too many times to really shop around. Plus, don't have the time...

There are some times that aftermarket is contraindicated.

There are times you really should go "OEM, BABY!"

This is probably one of them.

Well, I reckon 'rare' is a relative term in this case. You will be hard pressed in these parts to find a ZF6 truck, even in a salvage yard. I cruise the listings for trucks and they are a pretty hard to find at least as I have seen. Relative to automatic Ford 7.3 99+ body style I would say manuals are much less common.

After the broken boot allowing sand and dirt to get inside the trans, I'd sure be changing the oil in it a couple of times.
