With stock injectors you will see a max of 80hp over stock. So any tunes bigger than that won't give you as much as they say without Stage I injectors.
I knew I would upgrade injectors shortly after, so I ordered a 6 position chip from PHP that was burned for Stage I injectors already, and ran it at lower settings at first with no problems.
It really depends on what you do with the truck.
I got:
1. Stock
2.High Idle (faster warmups on cold mornings)
3. 35hp Heavy Tow
4. 60hp Economy
5. 100hp Performance
6. 140hp Extreme
I really only drive in 100 or 140hp settings unless I'm towing. Gets same fuel mileage if you keep your foot out of it, but you have power when you want it.
I would suggest high idle if you live in a cold climate, a good tow tune to keep EGT's down, and whatever performance tunes you want.
Hi All/Grease,
Sorry to jump in on your post, but I am in need of Injectors and am wondering what the benefit is (totally new to the PSD World) vs cost when bumping from stock to Stage I's. I have a 96 350 CC 4x4 196k on it and I use strictly for towing 13k - 14k 5th Wheel. Any help greatly apreciated. Have Intake kit all else is stock. Would also like to chip and am looking into the ones suggested above.
Thanks,
MHammer,
I'd suggest getting gauges first to keep track of everything, adding a intercooler to keep temps down since you tow a lot, then a good chip, and after all that look into injectors and maybe a bigger HPOP.
Stage I injectors are very affordable and the best bang for your buck. Check out Jim's site Rosewood Diesel Shop for injectors. He does great work for a great price and gets it done quickly.

Yours may have the AB 120cc split shot injectors, most of these trucks had AA 90cc injectors. You need to pull the valve covers and check- if you have the AB's you'll need a custom burned chip to run stage 1 single shots and while there will be some power added, it won't be as big of a change as it would if you had the smaller injectors (obviously).
My CA emissions 96 was built 6/96 and has the AB's, just FYI.

Thanks Super... Is there a marking on the AA/AB Injectors? Do you have to have a Chip in order to run Stage I's? How much can I expect to pay?

There will be a bunch of lettering/numbers on top of the injector solenoid (right on top of the injector) that you can see when you pull the valve cover. It will say AAxxxxxx or ABxxxxxx. An easier test is to look under your fuel pump- if there is a black disc shaped gizmo hiding under the turbo then yours has the AB injectors.
You MUST have a chip to run stage 1's if you have AB's because they are single shot and your stock injectors are split shot. Stage 1's would probably run okay in a truck with AA's but wouldn't be working to their potential without a custom chip. A custom chip starts at around $350 or so new, depending on who you go with and how many tunes you want.
