I have a 2001 7.3 2wd with 181k miles on it. The other day I was rolling out the drive and it felt like I ran over something small. Looked back and nothing. Went to accelerate and the truck was stuck in first. If you run the rpms up and lift your foot quickly it will shift into second and all is good until you stop and it shifts back to first. Has 781 code only. I called the local performance shop and took it to the shop they recommended. He says it needs to be rebuilt. He asked me alot of questions about my driving habits and talked of using a different converter and a sprag from another trans. I do drive this truck hard around town, but little towing. Running edge programmer on extreme, and open 4" exhaust. In the future I may go up to 70hp injectors, and maybe piggyback a chip, but not much else. My question is what do you recommend to do to the trans? Sounds like there are some weak factory parts in there. Should I get him to do it for $3k or just spring for the ATS stage one for $4k? Thanks. Just hoping to do it right the first time.
If you plan on adding bigger injectors or a different chip I would plan ahead & get a strong tranny.. Depending on where you live, there's BTS in Arkansas & John Woods in California. I just had BTS rebuild mine 2 weeks ago. No worries about warranties being voided due to chips, etc... As others on here have said... Its the last transmission i'll ever buy
Our shop truck has an ATS, nothing but problems since day one.
Its down again with slip codes. ATS will not stand behind the trans. and we only have maybe 1000 miles on it.
Do yourself a huge favor and put your money towards a BTS or John Wood trans.
Thanks guys. If mine has the mechanical diode, can it be removed and replaced with parts from another year? Also how do you know if yours has it. Everyone I've talked to here says the local guy here builds a mean tranny and stands behind it, but I want to make sure he knows there may be a weak link here. Thanks.
Do yourself a favor right now and get a BTS trans. That's all I have to say about that.
Don't worry about stacking chips on the 7.3, it don't work. Get a custom chip and be done with it. Make sure you have intake, exhaust, and gauges before you get a chip.

There is a way to fix the diode. Total rebuild. It is hard to say whether you have the diode for certain without a teardown. Some have said you can lift the rear wheels up and turn them and listen for the racheting sound. Not sure.
I think Franko has a really good builder. Ask him and he might be willing to share the information.
I called the shop today. He seems to be on top of it. It was the diode. He will replace it with a sprag from a different tranny. Well see. Super nice guy and stands behind his work so......

He is going to replace the diode with a part from another tranny? Man, Brian at BTS put all brand new parts when he built my trans.
Many people asked me why I didn't go local instead of driving over 900 miles to BTS. I just didn't want to be another person who trusted a "nice local guy" & end up on the losing end of a deal. Even though I drove 14 hours out & back.. after talking to Brian & seeing how much he improves the tranny over stock.. I don't have one regret about making the trip

I found it simpler to just have it shipped to me and have a tech do an "after hours" special when it came to install. Even if you had a Ford shop do it, I don't think that 9 hrs of a drive would pay for itself, time wise or money wise.
