started to try to get to the bottom of my intermittent white smoke at cold starts. i tested the glow plugs and found a bad one so i ordered a new set. probably a waste of time and money.
i talked to the previous owner the other day and he told me that he put a new pump on it and(he thinks)(i dont know what to make of that statement) he put only four new injectors in. however, 4 injectors are dated march 00 and 4 are dated apr 00. not sure why they would have two different dates but being so close im thinking that he did change them all out. how he does not know if he did or not is what bugs me.
i tried to find out what chuffing is in another thread but nobody was talking. my engine makes a sound like someone wisking a metal wisk ina metal bowl.
i guess after my new glow plugs do nothing ill look into a compression tester. are the glow plug threads 10X1.00 on the 92 7.3?
i cant seem to join oilburners because its not kicking me back any emails to finish the process.
i wish i wasnt so stupid and knew when to just light the stupid truck on fire.
white smoke at start up is perfectly normal.
we don't have a computer controlled engine to self regulate things like modern engines do.
once the engine warms up after a few minutes, the white smoke should go away.
unless you have a good quality ohm meter,it's not a waste to just replace all 8 glow plugs when you see a bad one.
(motorcraft [made by Beru] glow plugs are the only plugs you want, and can be found online for around 10 bucks each.)
can you post a video clip of your truck running on youtube?
all trucks require maintenance.even brand new ones.so don't get to frustrated.it's much, much cheaper to maintain an idi, than it is any other diesel offered in ford trucks in latter years.
i found it interesting that beru says to never put anything on the glow plug threads. i read this about ten hours after i anti-seized mine.
The reason being is conductivity. The glowplug controller uses resistance (ohms) to know how long to keep the timer on. Anything on the threads could intefere with the reading to the controller and give longer burn time on the plugs when it may not be neccessary.
i put anti sieze on mine to after almost twisting off a d@m& autolite in my engine..... no problems still glows for about 8 sec on a warm day 55 plus degrees and 12 on a cold 35-55 degree hasnt gotten any colder so we shall see in the next few weeks what happens at the freezing point

in an email i got from them a long time ago asking that question, they dont recommend it because if you get it on the tip or put too much on it can ignite or foul up the intake precup chamber and it isnt something they want to be liable for. They shouldnt sieze in the head because they only should have about 12-15ft/lbs of torque on them. But each truck is different like i always say.
sorry about the video..........i knew i never should have sold my cameras when i got out of adult entertainment!!!!!!
today i held the throttle about half way down to start it. i usually dont do that because it seems to start much quicker when i dont. maybe that is telling something?
oh and i should add that this is with a bad glow plug, the new set has not arrived. i also did a hydrocarbon test that was negative. coolant level is steady. no oil in water and no water in oil.
well we wont be able to help with the engine noise of course with that clip, but that's ok.
"my engine makes a sound like someone wisking a metal wisk ina metal bowl."
thats a lot of smoke for 50 degree weather!
my truck just has a little faint white cloud at these temps at start up.
do you have a diesel shop that will test fuel injectors for free,or a small fee close by?
does it clear up eventually? how long does it take? hows the power and fuel economy with the old girl?
what does the exhaust smell like? just raw fuel, and not sweet/coolant smelling right, and the coolant level maintains full?
yes i thought it was a lot of smoke myself even with a bad plug.
when its a bit warmer out it doesnt smoke. its been doing this in the cooler weather since i bought it back in march of this year. ive probably put about 2000 miles on it since the purchase.
maybe the wisking is the start of chuffing? ill try to find a video with better audio.
it does eventually clear up. i get about 17 mpg 4.10 manual with 1000 pounds in it.
it runs great, no coolant loss or bubbles.
to me the exhaust smells like kerosene. i had a much smarter guy i work with take a whiff of it and he said it smelled ok to him.
ill have to make some calls about the injectors. i think ill also do a compression and leak down test. im sure the problem is nothing money cant solve!
"it does eventually clear up. i get about 17 mpg 4.10 manual with 1000 pounds in it."
i have to say,id just make sure all the glow plugs where working, and run her without worrying to much.
maybe the cold timing advance just isn't working.
does it have more of a "rattle" to it (think cummins/powerstroke) and then tone back down to the tamer idi sound? if not, this may be the cause of more white smoke at startup - least im thinking it would.someone with more idi experience can correct or confirm that if they're reading this i hope.
today i started thinking of the cold advance as a possible cause..........even though the previous owner said he had replaced the pump because his cold advance had stopped working.
same 50 degree start this morning with no throttle and there was just a few seconds of smoke. as i pulled into work this morning a guy told me it sounded like it wasnt fireing on one.he also suggested i just drive it.
it didnt do a thing in my case but it might in someone elses is that the connectors to the glow plugs were heavily tarnished (green) upon close inspection. electrical cleaner from radio shack and .223 bore brush took care of that.
i guess that there really is no magic answer for me. ill just keep at it.
it does seem to knock a bit at start up. i thought that was the cold advance. i think ill try jumping it when its warm to see if the sound changes.
honestly, it sounds like timing. My truck, when i finished the intake valley pan gasket, had a timing hiccup. When i got it right, nearly all the startup smoke went away, ill share a vid when i get time tomorrow. You will see the blast of black smoke at startup....so sue me hahaha!
