ok so here the problem. i have a 04 6l and was driving it last night when she started smoking bad. Smoking out anyone around me, again smoking bad. When i looked at the truck in the morning i noticed that i puked a little from the cap, however there was no oil in the resivor. No oil in the coolant and no coolent in the oil. I park with the back end of my truck down and notice that i had a ton of what looked to be oil and coolent leaking out of the muffler. Pulled the Erg and i have again what looks to be some oil and moisture in the cooler. Not a whole lot probably about a table spoon or so, and the inside was pretty gunked up. Im pretty good at turning a wrench but have no clue where to start on this issue. What do you guys think the problem could be. HG? injectors? EGR and oil cooler? all of the above? thanks for the help guys.
God bless the 6 leaker.
same symptoms of my BIL, bad egr cooler, so ya need to look at the oil cooler when you have it fixed.
This would be my guess too. Sounds like your oil cooler plugged up and took out (overhearted) your EGR cooler. Make sure you replace them as a set and also it is highly recommended to do a VC-9 flush and add a coolant filter while you're at it to prevent future failures. GOOD LUCK!
Yes EGR cooler, replace both the EGR and Oil cooler when doing it. That is not oil in the exhaust but probably coolant mixed with the carbon thats in there.
The guys hit it right on the head. Your oil cooler is plugged and the egr cool took a poop. You can replace the EGR cooler and rebuild the oil cooler and be on you way.
If you decide to keep the EGR cooler rather than delete it, look into the bullet proof EGR cooler...my mind escapes me of who sells it now.
when mine dies I am going to get rid of it. I am just looking for a way for the truck to not go into that limp mode from the turbo when the EGR plug is disconnected.
not not to seem like a jerk or anything but i was actually in the process of trying tosell the truck before all this mess happened. Would i be able to just do the egr delete, or do i have to do the oil cooler as well. What would happen if i just did the egr and not the oil cooler

1. The oil cooler is the likely cause of all this.
2. You'll be sticking the buyer with a time bomb that will def. go off. Not too kewl on your part.

I agree completely. It don't cost that much more to fix it right and then you can sleep at night without worrying about somebody keying your new truck or breaking your windows out!
thats why i was asking, Don't mind telling a few white lies when selling a truck, however not my style to sell some one a complete peice of ****. I enjoy the windows on my house too much to start having bricks going through them every week.

I'm gonna guess that at that point the egr delete kit pretty much installes it's self.
