Hello everyone, I am new to this site and so far its seems great. Lots of good info. I am currently working on a 89 F-Super Duty with the 7.3 IDI. When I got the truck, it looked like someone shorted out the whole engine harness, taped & spliced wires every where, melted here & burnt there. What a nightmare!!! I am a novice diesel mechanic, so this truck has been a good instructional tool, more or less. I have read all the post about glow plug problems and my truck fits in this category. I have tested the GP's, 4 of them bad. As I re-wire this thing, I found that my cold advance solenoid isn't working. as I searched I found the plug to the temp switch laying next to it, slightly melted. Is there a way to test the temp. switch without the truck running, just to see if it is any good? I have re-wired the charging system to make sure I am getting good voltage to everything, except the GP controller,( it is still on the toggle swith the PO put in). He also re wired the GP contoller with-out any fusible links,( which I have done right off) just to make sure any more of this rig doesn't melt. I would appreciate any help that could get me going in the right track. I dont want this truck to end up being an ether baby!!!
With the engine cold you should be able to check the switch rather easily. With an ohm meter you should have electrical contact between the 2 prongs of the switch. With a test light jumper 12v to one terminal and use the test light on the 2nd terminal and your light should turn on. If the switch isn't closed and the engine is cold you'll need a new switch.
By the sounds of the wiring, did the PO wire the manual GP switch to control the GP relay? If he ran the GP's current through the switch in the cab I'd go yank that wiring out first thing as it's a fire hazard.
Thanx swoos, no the Po had the switch wired hot to the terminal on the fuel shut0off switch, which back fed voltage to the GP controller. Under the dash looks like he hack it up with a sword so thats a whole nother issue. I am trying to get it back to stock wiring, but it is a long adventure. I will check the temp-switch now, will post back in a bit how I made out. Thanx again for the diagrams, much clearer than the other 1s I pulled up.
Ok, the temp switch checks out good. Am gonna give it a whirl and see how it starts. Thanx again for your help, I will keep posting on how this venture is turning out.
