'84 E350 460 No sparks

I have an '84 E350 7.5L V8 and I went to start it yesterday - no start, fuel OK, but no spark at all. No trouble like this before, physically inspected ign. wires, distributor, battery and coil wires - OK. Battery is charged, cranks good. Looking in my manuals it mentions "Duraspark II" and "Duraspark III" systems for this year. I don't know for sure which I have, but I wonder if there's a common place to start looking for this kind of problem. The only ign. difficulty I've ever had with it was an intermittent coil (replaced a few years back).

make sure you are getting power to the distributor and/ or the coil. If so, I would guess bad coil or pick-up. Loose or corroded wiring and connections can also cause this. On a more serious note, if all of this checks good, ensure the rotor button is turning as you try to start the motor. It could be as simple as a bad dist. cap or button.

Thanks - I will check voltages and resistances as per the book.

The '84 book shows two systems for what was I think their CDI systems - Duraspark II and III. The diagram and testing procedures are a little different. How can one tell which system he has? I see the module on the fender, but no ID I can read.

In trying to narrow down the problem, I have determined that ignition coil primary and secondary resistances are correct, and that the correct voltage (6.5v) is at the coil with the switch on. The distributor cap and rotor appear to be fine.
It would seem that this points to ignition module, or distributor pick-up problems. I don't have a diagnostic test adapter to use for testing the system, just a VOM.

If you have wires going to the distributor then you have the Duraspark II system.
Duraspark II system uses a vacuum diaphragm on the distributor and the Duraspark III system does not.
The Duraspark III system uses a crank sensor on the front of the engine.

You more than likely have a bad Ignition Module. Get the one with the Blue grommet if you have the Duraspark II system.

I will order a new module. There are wires going to the distributor, so it is the Duraspark II. Thanks - I hope this will fix it.
