I'm getting a heck of a pinging sound from my engine (300 I6) at around 65 MPH. I've heard that cleaning out the EGR and IAC will help this, am I right?
Check your timing, yes try cleaning the egr and the iac ( iac is for idle control not high way cruising cleaning it wouldnt hurt) but also check / pull your codes
i hear ya on that. Even if my 150 were running i would be driving that thing. As i remeber i had to run 89octane at least to get it to pull well on the highway, this is probly your problem. If your running 87 you can get away whith it if you dont do much pulling or highway driving.
What has worked for me a couple of times over the years to get rid of pinging on my '80 300 6 is a can of Seafoam in about a half a tank of gas. I assume you have checked the timing and that there is not a stuck vacuum advance. Give it a try -it won't hurt anything if it doesn't worked youare just out 3 bucks or so.
I had this same trouble on my '81 with the 1st generation Electronic Ignition. After struggling in much the way these thread have I finally 'regained my brain' and adjusted the vacuum advance by removing the vacuum line at the distibutor and inserting an approapriate sized allen (I forget the size but it's tiny) and backing off in 1/4 turn increments until I achieved no ping at speed. Hope this helps.
