I don't know if this is the correct place to discuss fuel line. If not, I don't mind if someone moves it.
Anyway, my question is in regards to the fuel line on my 79 F-150. Currently, my truck has 2 fuel lines from the tank, one going to the pump, and the other to the vent. I notice when I am looking in an LMC Truck catalog, it shows the vent line going into some kind of round canister, like some kind of emissions device. I would like to do away with as much emissions stuff as possible.
When I rebuilt my 75 truck back in 98 I removed the carbon canister and the vent lines. Installed a 38 gallon tank without the vent in the top. It worked ok for a while till fuel would come out around the cap. I put a nice gasket on it. Then after driving it a couple of times I looked under the truck and the gas tank was sucked in big time. The vacuum from the pump sucked it in. Ended up buying another gas tank and teeing off the small line where the fill is to vent it. Worked ok but if it sits inside I get a gas smell. So long story is I would leave the vent line on. The gas tank needs it to vent. I would leave the carbon canister on to if you park it indoors. If its outside and you don't mind the gas smell you could remove that but don't plug the line. Route it somewhere so the fumes won't ignite. That is the way it is on my 73 tbird.
The line you're talking about is for the EEC system (evaporative emissions control) You can do away with it but it really is a benign system as far as pollution controls go. It won't have any effect on horsepower or fuel mileage.
If you do remove the system and cap the tank vent you MUST install a vented fuel filler cap.
Ok. That is great news. I can buy the tank from Bronco Graveyard for $100.00 with or without the tank vent hole. That would knock off a little bit of money. I also found a vented gas cap that is like OEM from AutoZone.
