I put a wicked wheel in my truck and the fuel mileage went from 17.8 mpg down to 15.6 mpg all hand calculated. i check for boost leak but did not hear any.is it normal to lose mpg with the wicked wheel. i have a 4" exhaust, international up-pipes and 6637 intake.oh i go to the same fuel station to fuel up. John
I have read and heard a 1-5 HP drop (relatively insignificant) and a mile or so per gallon is common with the WW. In your case, almost 2 mpg kinda stinks. Most people feel that reducing heavy load surge and the "cool" sound is the trade off.
Did you instal a Borg-Warner wheel (around $100) or the $50 cheapie?
well i just got a boost gauge after the wicked wheel so i don't have a before and after. i have 16 pounds of boost max. just cruising at 50/55 mph around 3 pounds. i installed a Borg-Warner wheel.
Chris- I don't have any first hand info on the WW. Just relayed some things I had read. I know the guy that has the video of the instal that looks like he did it in 3 minutes stated that he lost 5 HP on the dyno. Maybe it was a hot day or something. Of course torque is what it's really all about. and I have read on this forum about the drop in mpg. But who really knows what goes on.
But I have a WW sitting here on the desk, and it's going in soon. Did you notice any performance effect after installing yours. Surge, power, mpg, etc. Cole

Don't worry, we're all here to learn and just discuss things. You snuck your post in while I was typing mine, so if it looks like I was responding to you, I was trying to respond before you.
The wicked wheel, or the stock wheel from the earlier 7.3, or any of the other fancy names it goes by is meant to do one thing in our trucks. That is to address turbo surge. It does this by changing the boost curve and generally dropping boost pressure 1 - 2 psi since it moves less air.
A small drop in mpg's MIGHT be normal, but a big drop is not. Of course now that we have more info, a drop of a couple of MPG's is pretty common right after one adds a boost gauge. For our OP, I'd suggest checking your mileage again once the newness of watching that needle move has worn off.
Generally speaking, the less that needle moves, the better your MPG's are.
when and why did IH change from the earlier (staggared fin, "wicked wheel") compressor wheel to the one that causes surging, that we now have to change out for the earlier one.

The new wheel moves more air and typically works fine without any surge issues in a stock tune. When you go adding power, you either need to change the boost curve (less air from the wicked wheel) or increase the size of the turbo housing to keep the turbo from stalling.
The wicked wheel is popular because it is cheap. A ported shroud compressor housing will do the same thing for about 4 times the cost.
