very well could be but I thought he said it was a rebuilt or re furbished turbo..it doesn't change the fact that it was still the older style turbo..that would ex plane dumping them with so few miles... the differences farmboy found in his new turbo was the same as everyone else herd and felt going from the old to the new turbo.....and it still doesnt change the fact that someone could say they re-built it and some one believing it...

I know one guy who looked into it (Pwrstroke99) when he thought his turbo failed and as it turned out its much cheaper than what is often relayed on the forums.

If you had read the thread you woud know that the guys who sold them did not do it because of them being one style (old or new) or another. They work in the trades. They bought the turbos when times were better. They sold them to have up-front money to float their next job.

Someone "could" say they rebuilt a 38R. But no one did. And if they did, they would be wrong. They could say they refreshed one. That would be a better explanation.

Since people look up these old threads for reference, lets keep the facts straight.

now that i know who started the thread (i didnt even know i posted in it lol) and that i read the thread these turbo's have been from the original owner who bought them new and i assume he used them before selling?? or did he just dump them knowing whats comming up?? what ever he did he then sold them to Manny a while back (how long ago is a while back?)who had them on his truck for less then 500 miles and then sold them to these member's here...from what farmboy explaned when he got his new one and from that thread...for as many hands as its been though and the time frame he/they sat on them before these guy's bought them..it sounds like the old style turbo to me.
i made the mistake thinking these where the rebuilt OR WHAT EVER turbo's..i never read the thread..just went off hear say..referbish,rebuild or a new center section....it still could and does get taken the same way no matter how you look at it...keep an eye on ebay or craiglist..you will see them posted with any of them words to make them sound better then just saying used...so yes..the new members need to be aware of this..

With the GTP38R, do you have to have an EBPV and the wastegate? I have neither right now because I have the Van Turbo with the non-EBPV pedestal

Non-EBPV exhaust housing and blank pedestal with my 38r. 38r comes with wastgate and wastgate actuator. I have the wastegate actuator red pressure line disconnected but still have the wastegate solenoid hanging on the front of the spider.

Ron, I have heard this idea of an old and new style 38R before. Being curious, I made some calls. Per a Garrett rep, the 38R product has been on the market for about 7 years. The current 38R is the same cartridge and unit part# as the initial offering and there has been no change in the design of the product from 7 years ago till now.
