Bought an 04 diesel without doing my research love the truck but have now spent over 5000 on it and mechanic is telling me it needs more. Took it in losing coolant blowing white and black smoke and overheating. Mechanic never used before said blown head gasket, bad oil cooler, needs egr delete and I'd be fine. Had them fix all that and now have an oil leak they say is main seal, still overheating but not losing fluid they say there is a loss of power and is throwing every code possible for the fuel injectors and is probably the THICM?? . Gonna cost me thousands more . What should I do? Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated thank you.
Sounds like one of two things is happening.....either you bought a truck that is so far gone that it needs everything or you have a $h*tty mechanic that does not know what he is doing.....my opinion.
Hard to say what is your next step......your best bet might be to get a second opinion. I assume since you took it to a mechanic that your technical level might not allow you to work on these trucks?
The only reason I felt comfortable owning a diesel is because I can work on my own cars which saves me thousands. I would suggest diving in and start working on your truck and using these guys on this forum as a super valuable resource (there is a ton of knowledge here). Just diving in is the quickest way to figure it out and if you get in over your head then you can take it to a mechanic...
Start by buying a code reader. Clear any codes found and drive truck. Post whatever codes show up again. Scangauge II will also read/clear codes and other valuable sensor info.
There is a simple FICM fix you can read about in the tech folder. As far as the overheating did they check the heads for cracks and did they have them resurfaced before they did the HG's? How hot is the truck getting?
I had no idea how involved guys r into their trucks and i think it kicks a$$. I appreciate all the feedback will take all advice. Im not a "gearhead" but am inclined enough to want to work on my own truck and have a few friends who are willing to help me so I guess i need to get a code reader and or get a second opinion. Just really nervous and stressed out right now

Hahaha! Dude you've just opened up a new hobbie for your evenings. You'll be looking forward to reading on here every night. Check out the tech folder. There's alot of useful info in there and don't let any of this scare ya. Everyone on here is here to help. Good luck bro.
What Brickie said. Get that truck away from that mechanic. Sounds more like he is just a parts changer, that listens to what they here about these trucks, more than a tech that actualy knows what he is looking at.

Welcome to the "wonderful world of FTE"
Here are some things you really need to bookmark
The "tech folder" (it is at the top of the 6.0 page )
Go here and post a request for the spread sheets from Bismic. You need to just post, don't read the whole thread. AND, post your e-mail so you can receive them, a wealth of info in there.
Well just got home with my truck still getting hot but not overheated. The shop I took it to was a local diesel performance shop "supposedly" and now say there's no oil leak they couldn't get it to overheat and cleared the fuel injector codes and the truck is just fine I call BS! I don,t know what to do now other than take it to a dealer and pay to have it checked out just for peace of mind? What u guys think?
