i was trying to wire up my cb into the truck... it's a 23 channel cobra 29 old one but good one. so i get it mounted where i want it and i run the wires over to the fuse panel just to test it out good and it sparked...super hot melted wires but the cb came on...but i could hear it sizzling inside....i pulled it out and took it apart and some of the glue ( i think) on the board was sizzling when i hooked it to the battery...it's coming on still but no sound anywhere...so i tried another cb i had...can't remember what kind it was but as soon as i hooked it up it started smoking inside? wtf????? i have hooked up so much electronics and i can't even figure this one out. i had something like 12.8 volts going to it but it's recommended for 13.? so i don't know what caused it. i know both of them worked since i had them hooked up in my car and some other vehicles over time. anyone think of anything on this one?
There are some vehicles that are positve ground. Usually overseas. Check the radio to make sure it's not a positive grounded radio.
After making sure the radio is negative ground, hook the 12v hot wire to a 12v source, then hook the ground wire to the dash metal. Make sure you know which wires are which.
Sounds to me like you have a dead short somewhere, check the radio ground inside and where the pos & neg come out of the casing. However you said you fried two radio's??? coincidence? maybe.?. did you ground them to the same spot? maybe it is not a sufficient ground but then it should not have came on at all, unless it was grounding though the case. Dude I luv wiring **** but sometimes it can be soooo frustrating even though it is always something simple.
My plan of attack when it comes to something like this is sit back take a breath smoke a dube or have a beer "whatever floats ur boat" and think of the most simplest thing and go from there. A dead short would usually pop the fuse inside the radio, or on the wiring harness to the radio. Or Even in the fuse panel of the truck. Since two seperate radios did the same thing, it's not that likely.
Reversing the polarity would not pop the fuse, but it would fry the radio like an egg. The ground side is not protected by a fuse when the polarity is reversed.
Unless there is a serious fault with the trucks wiring, and the ground system on the truck has become reversed polarized, or the output of the battery is putting out more than excess of 20 volts, I don't see any other way this type of thing could happen. Either one of these things would fry the other components in the truck as well. AM/FM radio, wiper switch, ignition modules, etc... You hooked the battery cables up right I hope,
yeah...i had just charged the battery so i was like wtf maybe it's overcharge but nope got just over 12 volts....when it started messing up in the cab i pulled the radio out and the testing was on the battery posts..i honestly can't figure out why. and i know i didn't reverse anything...and i know a whole bunch about wiring...i have a small time car audio business... **** dad's even a computer&electronics engineer and he said wtf...i'm just stumped...my radio is wired up and working it hasn't given any problems but it' a pioneer with all new hard wires. idk...i haven't had a chance to look ate it much more...maybe tomorrow i can figure something out. thanks guys
