New Wheels & Tires
I explained to my wife that the 275/55/R20 Stock Pirelli Scorpions wouldn't do very well this winter in the snow or ice. She told me I could get some new tires, but when pricing new rubber I found out that a set of good (Not discount or low mileage) tires would be in the range of $2,300- $2,500.
I've always been the smaller wheel larger rubber kind of guy that I've read about so many times on here. I tried to talk the dealer into taking the stock 20" wheels off and putting on a set of stock 17" with meatier tires, but they wanted to charge me $1,650 to do so.
<ONow, with all of that said, I began my search for new tires. When I found out that a single tire would cost $550- $675 ea I began to ask questions. What about dropping down in wheel size and buying appropiate sized tires. I was told by several tire dealerships (Discount Tire, Les Schwab Tires, and Big 'O Tires) that is becoming a more popular decision. It took me about 4 weeks to finally nail down what it was that I was looking for and I'm so glad that I made the decision to get this set up. <O></O>

I got a set of 17" XD 797 Black and 295/75/R17 NITTO Trail Grappler. They do stick out past the the wheel well a little bit, but there is ZERO rubbing. I may be looking for some fender flares but we'll see.

How do the new tires sound? Is there an increase of noise in the interior of your truck? Different tires, new noise level. The new models are quiet inside with stock tires.
I ask because when I owned my 1999 F-150, I went with a more aggressive tread after wearing out the original set of tires. I could hear a difference from the tires. Had to turn up the volumne on the radio to drown out the tire whine.

There is a lot of difference between the stock Pirelli and the Nitto. It is louder and because they are wider they drive differently. The sound isn't so loud that it's annoying, I just notice it a lot more often.
They are 33" x 12"
It could be that I wanted new wheels so bad that I didn't look more that 2 shops. I saw the opportunity and went with it . Just do me a favor and don't let my wife know? I'd REALLY appreciate it.

They do great!!! There is a hill at the start of my road and with the Pirellis I would ALWAYS spin a little coming up. With these, I haven't even slipped or kicked it sideways. With about 250 miles on them I LOVE THEM!!!!!!
