Well I got around to replacing my thermostat this afternoon and it made the truck run much better. It still doesn't heat up to the middle of the gauge, but it is actually heating up and smoking less. A couple days ago my engine started making more noise than usual. I thought it was my imagination as it wasn't bad. So I checked the oil yesterday and it was 3 quarts low, I filled it up and was hoping that was the end of the problem. Unfortunately it wasn't, I guess the best way to describe it is the usual clacking is louder than it usually is (maybe bearing going out sound) . This goes away the second I touch the gas and comes back when I let off. I tried figuring out where it was, but the sound is very hard to hear when you have your head under the engine, if you are in the cab though it is very easy to hear. Anyone have any suggestions?
Also I did the EBPS cleaning mod while I was in the greasy mood.
Make sure the EBPS tube and fittings are tight. You may be hearing a small exhaust leak.
Edit: Keep an eye on that oil level. How many miles did it take to use 3 qts?
The EBPS is tight I double checked that. The oil took I'd say around a thousand miles. I had this issue last year which killed an injector and traced it to a shop not clamping the CCV tube to the valve cover. I put a new clamp on and the problem stopped, it would burn about a quart every 5-6k miles. This was why I was a bit surprised I was so low on oil. I'm kinda lost on why it randomly got low on oil.
Buy or borrow a mechanic's stethoscope. I actually used a medical one with a piece of masking tape on the end and ran it along the valve covers trying to find a noise injector. #8 it is prone to making a knocking noise, usually called a cackle. #8 is the one that gets starved for fuel. It is usually quieter off idle.

What year truck and how many miles?
Early 99 265xxx miles. I didn't check the valley for oil I will when I get off work tomorrow and will also be cleaning all of my boots as they are covered in soot/oil stuff.

Don't be surprised if you see a puddle of oil in the valley. That oil went somewhere.
My E99 did not have an AE Long Lead injector in #8 and was quite noisy. Almost all the noise from #8 went away with a fuel return kit which opened up the dead end fuel rail at the back of the driver side head and the front of the passenger side head. #8 fires right after #6 and since they are right next to each other #8 could not get it's fair share of fuel and it is the fuel that lubricates the fueling parts on the injectors. With just a bit less fuel to #8 it tends to wear out before the others.
Ok well the noise has gotten tons worse overnight. It is only happening at idle and sounds more like a bearing or something not getting oil. Need some ideas on what it could be as it sounds like the truck is gonna blow up when I am idling. I'm about to go look for some oil in the valley.
Here is the noise. It's an odd extension that my phone saved the noise as, but it will open with quicktime. You should download it in about 5 seconds as it is only 16 kb. I start out idling then accelerate slowly onto a road around 3-4 seconds.

Oh and since my truck already had the cam sensor replaced by the previous owner (with a gray one) and FORD said it never was changed I took them up on the recall and got a new gray one to see if that would help. It didn't, but the stealership was trying to convince me it was the torque converter and that I needed to pay $150 in diagnostic fees for them to be sure. Needless to say I highly doubt that it is the torque converter.

Did this break anyone else's computer? 15 minutes after downloading the audio file my computer crashed and won't do anything now.
I just downloaded it from the link and scanned it using microsoft security essentials and it showed nothing. I did get an internet popup when I clicked it, but it was usual ad from megaupload. Also just finished a full scan of my computer and nothing showed up. I'm not really sure what happened with your computer man sorry.
