First Fuel Filter Change

The other day i was doing some routine maintenance on the truck. I have done one other oil change since i had bought it. Easy enough to do. But it was the first time i did the fuel filters. I should have thought it through more about maybe putting a rag under the filter along the rail. I got a nice shower in diesel. If it was an aprodisiac i would have been sure to get laid. Oh well. I also replaced the coolant filter for the first time. I was surprised at the amount of grit that was in there. Glad i got it. Cheap insurance for sure. One question i was thinking of putting an addative in the next tank to clean the injectors. Any recommendations?

Diesel Kleen, Stanadyne, Opti-lube and Motorcraft are all popular additives. They are more of a lubricant and cetane booster than a cleaner.

I strictly use a small bottle of Diesel Kleen at every fuel fillup. I had read an article in a popular diesel mag a few years back regarding this product and how it would clean the entire system from tank to injector. Plus I noticed that every fuel filter change both filters are not black but a "dirty"-looking white, if I'm explaining myself clearly here. 133K miles on the engine and it idles like a new one.

Diesel Kleen makes two different additives regarding weather conditions (winter and "warm" months). The "white" bottle is good for the winter months because it includes an anti-gelling additive for temps below freezing. The "gray" bottle is used in the warmer months for higher cetane numbers and cleaning agents. I haven't had any problems since I began using this brand all year around. The tell-tale sign for me is checking the "color" of the fuel filters during each change.

My first fuel filter change experience was done from the outside looking in. I took my truck to a dealer (I was skeptical of that "underneath" filter and what may happen) and watched the tech remove both filters, especially the one underneath the driver's side cab. I witnessed the fuel running down the rail and onto the shop floor. Since then I have taken mine to an independent service shop and gladly paid the mechanic $25.00 to soak himself and his shop floor.

Autozone has Diesel Klean 32oz ($8.49 IIRC) "gray" bottle for about $1 more
than the 16oz bottle.

I also bought a $1.49 funnel to make it easier to pour in.

At first I bought the bigger bottle because of the price difference. I would pour half in at every fuel fillup (25-30 gals). The remainder I would place in the cab of my truck for the next fuel fillup. But the only problem I had with that half bottle was the fumes that would emit and fill up my cab once that seal was broken on the bottle itself. I decided it was safer (and healthier) to buy the smaller bottle and pay more in the long run than gas myself to death each time I drove my truck.

Just keep the smaller bottles and then buy the large bottle and use to refill. I keep my bottles in a ziplock bag behind the rear seat. truck already has nice plastic tray for any spills and you dont get the smell.

Funnel and bottle(s) in a gallon size ziplock fit in the Ex's jack store compartment along with gloves, paper towels, etc. for any roadside
issues (they only seem to occur when I am nicely dressed?)

edited:
Also good spot to keep spare fuel filters and wrench(es) to put them in away from home, once I get them....
