Disconnect the vacuum line to the dist and plug it while the engine is idling. If it dies on you from doing this, then turn the idle screw up till it will run with the vacuum line plugged off.
If this straightens it out and it will run down the road, then bring it back to the driveway, and with the idle set the way you want it, find a port on the carb that will not suck on your finger at idle, but will when you rev the engine. If you find one, plug the dist vacuum line into that port.
