4r70w to E40D

Is there a way to change the transmission in my truck to a e40d rather than a 4r70w. the computer in my truck is mass air flow so i would rather not change the computer and the engine is a 302. The tranny is starting to slip from 2nd and into 3rd so i want to be ready when it finally gives up the ghost. I have heard the e40d is a better tranny thats the reason in asking about the swap.

You would need a wiring harness for the transmission and engine from a California 1995 351 E4OD truck and a computer out of a 1995 351 California truck also.
I think this would work.

I do not think they ever put the E4OD behind a 302.

I can't believe you want to do that swap. I'm the one that wants a 4r70w instead of an e4od lol. Just rebuild your 4r70w trust me the components that the kits have today will not give you the trouble that the past 4r70w had.

I'm a newbie, but I'm pretty sure my '92 302 has an E4OD behind it. I'm positive it's computer controlled. Maybe someone who actually knows(subford, ymeski, ect) will comment and straighten this out.

Yes they did do that in 1992 & 1993 and older trucks but I was talking about 1994-1995 F-series.

oh, and sorry bout mentionin you when I was tryin to correct you.lol. I guess I need to learn to read more.lol.

I read somewhere (either here, or on the ford f-150 forums) that the 4r70w is just a later version of the E4OD. Is this not true?

Ok after looking at the 1994-1995 prints I guess they did put the E4OD behind the 5.0L but I still think this would be a rare find so you could stay with SFI and MAF.

A4OD

A quick way to tell the difference is to count the pan bolts. The A4OD has 20 bolts and the 4R70W has 14 bolts.

No it is not.
The 4R70W is Computer controlled up graded AOD.
It is also the wide version of the AODE that was used in cars and that is what the W is for in 4R70W.
And the E4OD is a Computer controlled up graded C6.

Yeah the gears on the 4r70w are wide and that's what makes it a good tranny. supposedly it can take 700 ft lb of tq. I think it might be a little less but it's believable

what do you mean no?
the aode was a close ratio and the 4r70w evolved from it and the 4r70w was wide ratio.

okay the skinny on why i wanted to even ask about the swap is that i will be at some point swaping over to a 351w and when i do so i want to know that the tranny will hold up to the 351w. Also i want to go ahead and get all the stuff i need because the tranny is starting to slip but not really bad considering it has 269,000 miles on it.
