Drive Shaft

Hi all,
This might seem like a silly question but on my 77 F150, the slip joint coupling on the rear drive shaft is at the diff end. Is this standard or has some one before me put it on around the wrong way?

I`d almost have to look but I am 99% sure mine`s slip joint is facing the transfer case. I dont know why it would matter which way it would face though.

I have never heard or seen that before. What rear end do you have? I would think there would be too much play with the rear end moving up and down the seal would not hold.

I am thinking you are thinking something else or I am just using the wrong word. But nevertheless I am talking the part of the driveshaft where the short piece slides over the longer section of the driveshaft. Maybe there is a correct word for this other than slip joint?

Do you mean slip yoke? Does your drive line have a fixed (attached) yoke on both your transfer case and differential and slides in and out in middle or does it have a slip yoke that slides onto the output shaft by sliding into the rear of the transfer case. This is all assumeing you have a 4x4, if it is a 2x4 just substitute transmission for transfer case.

My driveline has a fixed yoke on the transfer case and on the rear axle. These yokes are then bolted to a u-joint which is then connected to the driveshaft which has a coupling thing in it which lets the one half slide into the other half which I have been trying to call a slip joint which must be incorrect?

The slip joint should be near the trans end of the drive shaft.

Ok, I miss understood when I first read it. So you have a two piece driveshaft. When I first read it sounded liked you had a slip yoke that slide into the differential. Sounds like someone took the drive shaft off at one time and put it on backwards. Usually the shorter piece is closer to transfer case but it also sounds like it its working fine for you.
