i just replaced my oil pump and filter on my 81 f150 4x4 with the st 6 300. i am now experiencing a vibration at around 40 mph. i have noticed that the choke cable is off. how do i adjust the choke and would this cause the problem?
The choke can cause the problem. Yet most vibration problems I have seen come either from tires or front end problems. Does the truck have a 4 speed or a C6? If you smell gas and get poor fuel economy, I would probably guess the choke isn't opening all the way. There are 3 crews on the electric choke. Sometimes, you can loosen them and move the choke solenoid either clockwise or counterclockwise. But I would check for tire balance if te choke isn't hanging up. Good Luck!
40 mph vibrations usually include front end ball joints tie rod ends stuff like that. Is it 4x4? Are the hubs engaged? If they are try undoing them, then giver and see. If it goes away its probably the u joints in the driveshaft. But if its not 4x4 its got to be Tires, or balljoints, tie rods or pitman arm idler arm. Check em out any play would cause Vibration. also Your oil pump and filter change would not do this. thats just lubrication to your motor. hopefully everything panned out there, would hate to see another 300 go down, but check those part listed ^ there. Let us know!!
I had the same problem....had the front tires high speed balanced and it ran smooth again...the more worn your front end parts are the more critical balancing is...good luck..Al
I have located the problem to be the transmission crossmember. I went to the junkyard and got one out of a 1985 f150, but the bolts on the bracket between the transmission and the crossmember are about 3/4 of an inch off. Did ford change the crossmember?
