Personally I start in Stock because I don't like to drive in a higher HP tune until the engine warms up even though my new tunes take into account the engine oil temp.

Although it makes sense to consider stock if you have stock but what are those that just have a PCM flash going to do then? I think the same as robin, allow everything to come up to temps then wail on it!

Think about those of us with injectors. My "stock" is probably a 100 hp tune by itself.

I run mine in Extreme 95% of the time (including at start up), but I baby it until the oil is almost fully warmed up. And I'm running a lot more power than "they" say my PMRs will take. Go figger.......

I always warm mine up in stock, but my boss leaves his in 80E all the time. He usually calls me to remind him what tunes he has, and the order they are on his DP...Thankfully our first 5 tunes are the same on both of our DP's
The PCM flash is a good point, plus those with a SC and the like are in a higher hp tune all the time also.

Ok I dont want to hyjack here, but you guys mention waitin til the oil temp is up to normal. Im just curious how long it takes to get to normal, say from a cold start at like 50 degrees?

I dont like to start mine in high idle, ill use it after temps start to come up, but its usually in 80 most of the time. I was just throwing some of the other concerns out there.

You'd be surprised, it's a lot of oil. Just put in my EOT guage this summer so I haven't tried it at 50 degrees yet. But starting out about 70 degrees, it takes almost 8 miles of easy driving to get all the way up to temp.

Guys,I just had my chip updated a while back, and according to James at DP,part of the updated files was it didn't make full power until the operating temp reaches a certain degree. You don't notice it(sotp),but that allows us to start it up in any tune.I definately wouldn't start it up in the high idle tune.

The reason you want the oil warm before switching to a higher HP tune or driving hard in a higher HP tune is because SOI timing (Start Of Injection) is based on engine oil temp, as well as some other parameters.

That is how the new tunes work. Last time I was live tuned, Jody said to start the truck in the tune that you will normally drive in because the tune will not give you full power untill the oil is at a certain degree. That is to keep people from trying to run the truck hard without warming it up. I start my truck in 80e all the time.

What is considered a "new tune?" I've had my DP for a couple of years so am I on "old tunes?"

I don't know when Jody started putting this into his tunes, but I think it was in May this year when I had live tuning.

Yep Chris,if your chip has been in for a couple years you definately need to get it updated. It has downshifting, less smoke,EOT consideration, mine had been in for about three years,I think, and Jody said there were literally thousands of updates.I think I sent mine in around June or July.

I just got by chip back this past Monday from being reflashed for my new transmission and while talking to Jodi, he didn't mention anything about the trucks running at partial power until the oil was up to temp. I do know I have already thrown a check engine light which I did not think was supposed to happen with the new tunes. The CEL must be something else, maybe HPOP or transmission related. I do know on the instruction page, it does tell you know that is says not to start the truck in high idle or change settings under load or in heavy traffic when an engine shut down could could as accident
