I love my truck...everything except the TTB front end that is. I cannot stand the bowing of the wheels when in reverse, and the "shoving" it does when turning sharply. Does anyone have any experience putting a solid axle under a truck in place of the TTB? How difficult was it and what kind of problems did you run into (steering, ect.)?
Twin Traction (or as we call it tractor) Beam.
Ford decided the tried and true straight axle made a 4x4 truck ride like (gasp) a truck so they designed a pseudo independent front axle.
The conversion is not that difficult as far as I can tell.
A friend of mine created a standout 1997 F350 shortbed supercab back when the F350 was not offered in that configuration.
He installed a Dana 60 soild axle and from what he told me the conversion was clean and simple.
I think any competent 4wd shop could handle it and there are numerous posts archived in the suspension and drivetrain forums on this site.
TTB is a crappy system and the reason why I bought F350's in the past. Now you get a soilid axle with any 99 and up SD.
The TTB may work alright on a small "town" truck with stock tires, etc., but I find it to be a very crappy system on mine. There is just too much weight and stress on it.
