My '65 f100 is pretty straight forward. Long bed,300 straight six, three speed w/overdrive,3:70 gears. I looked all this up frommy I.D. plate , but there were two things I couldn't figure out.the body #is 481, and the DSO # is 71. I think DSO stands for Dealer Special Order, but why would somebody special order a truck with, as far as I can see, no options whatsoever, except maybe the mirrors(the big towing ones). Any help would be appreciated.
Here, by request! (As a picker, I learned REAL FAST to stay within my repetoire, but THIS I've got the books for!)
These are the Trim codes from Vol I of the 1966 Ford Truck shop manual. I'm still researching the trim codes for 61-65 from the Dealer's Ford Truck Parts Book to confirm these are the same for 64 and 65. Most other interior body trim parts are the same for those years, so I strongly suspect they are, BUT I haven't nailed it down in black and white. Those codes are in the Soft Trim Section, and I haven't found that - yet.

John Sutton originally posted this on th old board so I thought it pertinet to this post.
It seems your truck was "special ordered" with the beige interior? Let us know what else your cab has in it and we can let you know what seems out of the ordinary, if anything.
cool! My truck does have a beige seat. I thought maybe my grandfather had it recovered way back, but I guess not. Every thing else is pretty basic. Standard instrument cluster, Black floor mat W/ gear and lightning bolt (Are these still available??), no dach pad or soft trim on doors. I guess the seat is the oddball. I think I'm in shock, I actually have optional equipment on my truck!!!! Thanks!!!

the best way to answer your question about DSO is to explain that ford identified the district to which a vehicle is shipped. two numbers or a letter and a number indicate that the vehicle is a standard assembly line unit built as the dealer requested for his inventory (or just built and used to fill orders). the shop manual has a list of DSO codes. a special order vehicle carries a 6 digit number. the first two digits are the same as a regular vehicle and the last 4 digits are taken from the last four numbers on the order sheet that was used to pick the equipment. contrary to popular thought, a special order vehicle does not have to have options. as matter a fact a vehicle can be special ordered to eliminate standard equipment like a heater which gets the cutomer a reduction in price. most of the really cheap models are special order because dealers did not tend to stock base vehicles because they do not sell as well and there is not as much profit for the dealer. i own a 69 mercury cougar that was ordered as a radio, heater, and sound deadener delete vehicle. Oh and did i mention it was also ordered with a 428 super cobra jet engine a 4 speed and a 4.30 trac loc LOL! the DSO is 526767. hawkrod
My newly aquired truck is a 1962 short unibody, and the i.d. plate is on the glove box door, not the driver's door like my 1965. It was originally bought by the State of Oregon as a forest ranger truck, so I was told. Is that weird?

Hawkrod is correct.
a DSO of 71 designates it as being shipped to the Los Angeles district. 72 would have been the San Jose district.
The DSO can help identify where in the US a vehicle was origanaly shipped/sold in.
