Trouble shooting

Hey guys, I just got my beast back up and running. It starts and runs great. The thing I'm having trouble with right now is when I'm in the higher rpms it'll spit and sputter for a few miles then it seems to be ok.

Also on a side note I get about a 1/8 to a 1/4 turn of free play in the steering is this normal?

Thanks for the help

So you mean you are traveling at higher RPM's for miles and at some point the sputtering goes away?

That's a tough one... I was gonna say clogged fuel filter isn't letting enough fuel get to the IP but if the RPM's stay the same and the problem goes away then I'm out.

Do you get a lot of black smoke, or any kind of smoke or is she blowing clean at those RPM's?

Maybe she's only spitting and sputtering while cold and then when warm runs fine? If that's the ticket then maybe it is the fuel filter. Cold diesel doesn't flow as well as warm. I'd know, my truck can lay down a little smoke from unburnt fuel but never does it when the engine is still cool, only when all the way up at operating temps.

As for the steering, it's common but not normal! haha

Try tightening up the steering box, there's a nut and flat screwdriven bolt on top, loosen the nut and turn clockwise the bolt until it firms up, then tighten the nut.
Also get someone to turn the wheel back and forth just from end to end inside the "play", so not all the way just 1/4 turn each way, don't even move the wheels. Look at all the tie rods for movement, if they move independet of the rest of the steering assembly they are shot. Greasing them helps a little but replacement is really the only way to fix it, though expensive. Over 200 bones for all of it.

It dose it when its cold, i can't tell if it stops at opertating temp or a at some random point, my temp guage doesn't work. As for the smoke on startup i get some blueish whitish smoke but that only lasts for a minute or so. Nothing at the higher rpms when its sputtering.
