ok i know this isn't really the section for this but i figured alot of you guys know this kind of stuff and seem to be very helpfull. I can easily get my hands on some landing/taxi lights from an aircraft, and Ive heard of people using them on their rigs. I do alot of off-roading with my truck so i wont be blining people down the highway with these, but I often get called at 0200 by friends of mine that are stuck out in the woods and I always end up having too pull them out and the stock headlights arn't cutting it anymore. How would i go about using these lights on my truck (ive confirmed with a e&e troop friend of mine that they are 28 vdc)
wire the lights to a set of 12 volt batteries in series for 24 volts.
you can use a battery isolator to wire the batteries so they will charge singularly.
the 12v chrome housing lights from walmart are cheap and work just fine. i had 4 of them on my chevrolet and it worked great! flooded the area 250 ft in front of me.
Ive seen alot of cheaper lights that im sure would do just fine... just kinda wanted it to be from my plane ya know? anyway ill look into how many watts they are. I had an idea to take a 105mm shell, cut it down and mount a light inside of It, I think i'd look sick
just for the record im a crew chief... not a zipper-suit. i hit things with hammers (really freaks the army guys out when they walk out to a slick and im beating on something with a smile on my face) and i dont do stupid stuff like write up "i.f.f. in-op in o.f.f. position" thats a true story by the way
For the 28V lights, you're going to need a step up transformer setup or a dual battery setup.
The issue with landing lights is they tend to get hot and burn out at low speeds/stopped. I'm going on 2 years(250W 13V) on the set I have on my Dodge, but, I attribute that more to luck than anything else.
My favorite is the "Friction locks causing throttle lever to stick"
I always attributed most of the landing light failures on GA aircraft to vibration. Cowl mounted lights were burned out with amazing regularity. On the other hand our 172's landing light is in the left hand wing and behind a lexan/plexi leading edge section and doesn't receive any direct air cooling at all and hasn't had to be replaced for as long as the plane has been in the family (about 15 years now).
i was looking through wiring disgrams today, didn't have a whole lotta time but these are of a (mostly) H model c130, I was planning on using the taxi lights on the MLG outboard doors cause' we seem to have alot of em'
